A novel phosphated, oxidized starch having a molecular weight of about 1,500 to about 40,000 Daltons, a carboxyl degree of substitution of 0.30 to 0.96, and a phosphate degree of substitution of from about 0.002 to about 0.005, which is useful as a dispersant for aqueous, high-solid slurries of mine
