The panel joints are at the top and outer side of the side sill. The inner sill panel is thicker than the outer sill panel. A cover may be provided extending to cover an outer side surface and a bottom surface of the side sill as well as a joint between the side sill and the floor panel of the car body. A partition plate can be provided for reinforcing in the vicinity of a base portion of a center pillar of the side panel.
