The present invention provides an antibacterial composition comprising from 0.1% w/v to 10.0% w/v of a water soluble salt of chlorhexidine, at least one nonionic surfactant and a diluent or carrier, wherein the weight ratio of the chlorhexidine salt to the nonionic surfactant and an inert diluent or carrier, wherein the weight ratio of the chlorhexidine salt to the nonionic surfactant is not more than 1:7.
