A tensioning apparatus for a lashing strap (8) includes a frame (1) having side walls (5, 5′). One end of the lashing strap (8) is fixed to the frame. A spindle (11) is rotatably secured to the frame (1), bridging the space between the side walls (5, 5′) and bearing a tensioning lever (17) for winding the lashing strap (8) up from its free end.
