Batteries based on lead chemistry, e.g., lead-acid batteries, are substantially improved through the use of a particular positive material. This material is formed by the electrochemical conversion of tetrabasic lead sulfate (TTB) where this TTB is synthesized at a pH in the range 9.3 to 12 and under reaction conditions that provide a substantial excess of sulfate to the reactive lead. The resulting materials provide needle-like structures with a width generally in the range 3 to 1 m

A process for fabricating a battery that has a lead based electrode comprising the steps of reacting at a pH in the range 9.35 12 lead oxide with sulfate in the presence of a stoichiometric excess of said sulfate to form a reaction product wherein said reaction is performed at a temperature of at least 60°C. or said reaction product is subjected to a temperature of at least 60°C., applying a material comprising at least one component of said reaction product to an electrode structure and converting said material to lead dioxide.
