Described are novel reversible photochromic naphthopyran compounds substituted on the naphthyl portion at the carbon atom juxtaposed to the oxygen of the pyran ring with, for example, an acetoxy group. Also described are organic host materials that contain or that are coated with such compounds. Articles such as ophthalmic lenses or other plastic transparencies that incorporate the novel naphthopyran compounds or combinations thereof with complementary photochromic compounds, e.g., spiro(indolino)-oxazine type compounds, are also described.

A photochromic article selected from the group consisting of face shields, goggles and visors, comprising a polymerized organic host material and a photochromic amount of a naphthopyran compound represented by the following graphic formula: [Figure] wherein, I. L is the group, -W-T(Z)〓Xg, wherein: (a) W is the bivalent radical, [Figure] said J and J′each being selected from the group consisting of C1-C4 alkyl, or J and J′taken together is a single oxygen, (b) T is carbon, (c) X is selected from the group consisting of oxygen, and -N-J″, said J″being selected from the group hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl, or J″may combine with Z to form a pyridyl group, (d) Z is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 monohaloalkyl, amino, C1-C4 mono- or di-alkylamino, and unsubstituted or substituted phenyl, said phenyl substituents being selected from the group consisting of C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 monohaloalkyl, C1-C4 polyhaloalkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy(C1-C4)alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy and halogen, said halogen (or halo group) being fluorine or chlorine, and (e) g is the integer 1, and II. B and B′are each selected from the group consisting of: (a) the unsubstituted or substituted aryl groups phenyl and naphthyl, (b) the unsubstituted or substituted heterocyclic groups pyridyl, thienyl, furyl, piperidinyl and furfuryl, (c) C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 haloalkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy(C1-C4)alkyl, C3-C6 cycloalkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy(C3-C6) cycloalkyl, and halo C3-C6 cycloalkyl, said halo group being fluorine or chlorine, and (d) B and B′may combine and taken together form the group, adamantylidene, the aryl group substituents being selected from C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 haloalkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, C1-C4 alkoxy(C1-C4)alkyl and halogen, the heterocyclic group substituents being selected from C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 haloalkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, C1-C4 alkoxy(C1-C4)alkyl and halogen, said halogen (or halo group) being fluorine or chlorine.
