The subject invention is directed at glasses wherein either a portion of the ZnO or alkali metals, or both, is replaced by Cu2O, i.e., monovalent copper. Specifically, the present invention is directed at a glass consisting essentially of, expressed in terms of mole percent on the oxide basis, 28-42% P2O5, 15-30% Cu2O, 10-30% R2O, wherein R2O is selected from the group consisting of 0-15% Li2O, 0-20% Na2O, and 0-10% K2O, and up to a total of 45% of optional ingredients in the indicated proportions selected from the group consisting of 0-10% Al2O3, 0-15% MgO, 0-20% CaO, 0-20% SrO, 0-20% BaO, 0-25% MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO, 0-35% ZnO, 0-10% MnO, 0-2% CeO2, 0-2% Ln2O3, 0-10 Al2O3 0-10% B2O3, 0-10 Fe2O3 0-10% Al2O3+B2O3+Fe2O3, 0-7% MoO3 0-7% WO3 0-7% MoO3 +WO3, and 0-8% F, the latter as analyzed in weight percent. In addition, it is necessary that the predominate proportion of the copper in the glass is present in the cuprous or Cu+oxidation state. These inventive glasses exhibit a transition temperature normally below about 300°C., a working temperature below about 400°C., while, at the same time, exhibiting excellent resistance to attack by water.
