A method for removing SOx from a fluid catalytic cracking process wherein alumino-silicate hydrocarbon cracking catalyst particles and SOx absorbent catalyst particles, which are each contaminated by sulfur-containing coke, are each regenerated by removal of the coke and wherein SOx created by said removal of coke is captured in a catalyst regenerator that forms a part of the fluid catalytic cracking process, said process further comprising: (1) circulating a minor portion of SOx absorbent-catalyst particles that are comprised of a bastnaesite/magnesium oxide/alumina compound having an ability to absorb SOx with a major portion of alumino-silicate hydrocarbon cracking catalyst particles wherein the minor portion of SOx absorbent-catalyst particles constitute from about 1 to about 5 weight percent of total catalyst used in said method for removing SOx from a fluid catalytic cracking process and wherein the bastnaesite/magnesium oxide/alumina compound is further characterized by the fact that a bastnaesite component of the bastnaesite/magnesium oxide/alumina compound is chemically reacted with a magnesium oxide/alumina component of the bastnaesite/magnesium oxide/alumina compound.
