A pipe cap assembly with embodiments which are capable of use over a very wide temperature range and which may be cycled through temperatures varying widely from the ambient assembly temperature and also over a wide range of pressures without the need to be retightened. The embodiments of the invention include a pipe cap for sealing a pipe comprising a hollow fitting member with a first end and a second end and an annular tapered ridge extending from the first end of the first hollow fitting member and threads to attach the hollow fitting member at the first end thereof to a pipe. A hollow sealing member further comprises the invention having a first end and a second end, the first end of the hollow sealing member forming an annular taper channel configured to compliment the shape of the annular tapered ridge and to sealingly engage the annular tapered ridge of the hollow fitting member such that the hollow sealing member substantially retains its original configuration when the annular tapered channel receives the annular tapered ridge. A cap member further comprises the invention, wherein the cap member engages the second end of the hollow sealing member.

A pipe cap assembly comprising: (a) a tubular sleeve having a first end, an opposing second end, and an interior surface defining a passageway longitudinally extending between the first end and the second end, the interior surface further having an inner diameter and a set of engagement threads positioned at the first end; (b) a tubular first fitting member having a free first end and an opposing second end with an annular tapered ridge projecting from the second end, the first fitting member also has an exterior surface extending between the first end and the second end with a set of engagement threads positioned at the second end for complementary engagement with the engagement threads on the interior surface of the tubular sleeve; (c) a cap member having a closed first end and an opposing second end with an annular tapered ridge projecting from the second end; (d) means for containing the tapered ridge of the cap member within the second end of the passageway extending through the tubular sleeve; and (e) a tubular sealing member positioned within the tubular sleeve between the annular tapered ridge of the first fitting member and the annular tapered ridge of the cap member, the sealing member comprising: (i) a first end face having an annular tapered channel recessed therein, the tapered channel being configured to substantially compliment the shape of the tapered ridge of the first fitting member and to sealingly engage the tapered ridge of the first fitting member as the first fitting member is advanced within the passageway of the tubular sleeve to compress the sealing member between the first fitting member and the cap member; (ii) a second end face having an annular tapered channel recessed therein, the tapered channel being configured to substantially compliment the shape of the tapered ridge of the cap member and to sealingly engage the tapered ridge of the cap member as the first fitting member is advanced within the passageway of the tubular sleeve to compress the sealing member between the first fitting member and the cap member, the sealing member being configured to resist any substantial macroscopic deformation after each tapered ridge is sealingly engaged to the corresponding tapered channel; and (iii) an exterior surface extending between the first end face and the second end face, the exterior surface having a maximum outer diameter smaller than the inner diameter of the tubular sleeve so that the sealing member is loosely positioned and selectively removable from within the tubular sleeve.
