An athletic shoe comprising: an upper; a sole attached to said upper, said sole including a recessed cavity formed therein; and a plug-in module removably retained in said cavity, wherein said cavity is adapted to receive the plug-in module in at least a first and a second position, wherein said second position is inverted from said first position, and said plug-in module comprises illumination means, activated by pressure from a foot of a wearer during walking when said plug-in module is received in said cavity in said first position, for emitting light which is visible from a location exterior of said sole, said illumination means including a battery for supplying electrical energy, light emitting means, responsive to the electrical energy supplied from the battery, for emitting visible light, and means for electrically interconnecting said battery and said light emitting means, wherein said illumination means does not emit light in response to said pressure from a foot when said plug-in module is inserted in said second position and, wherein said sole includes a midsole portion formed of a foamed elastomeric material having a hardness of about 55 to 60 Shore C, and said plug-in module is formed of a polycarbonate material.
