The present invention relates to water-in-oil and water-in-oil-in-water multiple emulsions and methods of preparation which overcome many of the limitations of previous emulsions and are superior preparations for use in numerous applications including, but not limited to, vaccine adjuvants, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, foods, and various household and industrial uses.

[ We claim:] [1.] A vaccination method comprising administering to a patient a water-in-oil emulsion vaccine comprising an immunologically effective amount of an antigen, a first surfactant comprising, a polyoxyethylene polyoxypropylene block copolymer having the following formula: EQU HO(C.sub.2 H.

[ We claim:] [1.] A vaccination method comprising administering to a patient a water-in-oil emulsion vaccine comprising an immunologically effective amount of an antigen, a first surfactant comprising, a polyoxyethylene polyoxypropylene block copolymer having the following formula: EQU HO(C.sub.2 H.sub.4 O).sub.b (C.sub.3 H.sub.6 O).sub.a (C.sub.2 H.sub.4 O).sub.b H rein the mean molecular weight of the hydrophobe (C.sub.3 H.sub.6 O) is between 5,000 to 15,000 Daltons and the percentage of hydrophile C.sub.2 H.sub.4 O) is between approximately 2% and 15% by weight the block copolymer having a hydrophile-lipophile balance of less than 2, and a continuous oil phase, prepared by the process comprising the steps of:A. first homogenizing the antigen and the block copolymer in an aqueous phase to form an inner aqueous phase; andB. homogenizing the inner aqueous phase with an amount of oil sufficient to form a continuous oil phase, to form a water-in-oil emulsion having the inner aqueous phase dispersed in the continuous oil phase.
