[ I claim:] [1.] A method of controlling a fuel cell having a horizontal stack of fuel cells each having an anode electrode and a cathode electrode which sandwich an electrolyte membrane and which are sandwiched by separators, comprising the steps of supplying a fuel gas and an oxygen containing gas in a direction of gravity to the anode electrode and the cathode electrode, and supplying a cooling medium into said separators in a direction opposite to the direction in which the fuel gas and the oxygen containing gas flow, wherein the cooling medium minimizes the temperature distribution within the fuel cell, thereby improving the operation of the fuel cell.
