[ What is claimed is:] [1.] A process for removing contaminants containing sulfur, nitrogen and/or oxygen from a hydrocarbon stream, comprising:contacting a hydrocarbon stream with an adsorber consisting essentially of silica gel or silica gel modified with one or more elements selected from the group consisting of Group IVb, Vb, VIb, VIII, lb, IIb, tin, lead and bismuth, said contacting step carried out at a temperature of between 0.degree.-150.degree. C. and a pressure of 1-20 atm;washing said adsorber with a polar solvent selected from the group consisting of water, acetone, methanol, ethyl acetate and mixtures thereof; andregenerating said adsorber by thermal treatment in a flow of inert gas carried out at a temperature of 100.degree.-200.degree. C.
