A radio telephone with a sliding cover that moves between positions concealing and revealing a plurality of keys. Predetermined functions are performed in response to respective sequences of actuations of the plurality of keys. The exposed keys are utilizable for a range of positions of the slide.

[ What is claimed is:] [1.] A radio handset comprising a housing having a key pad including a plurality of keys mounted on a main body and an extending portion mounted for longitudinal slidable movement between a first position in which the plurality of keys are concealed and a second position in which the plurality of keys are exposed, and a processor operable to perform respective predetermined functions responsive to respective sequences of actuations of the keys, the processor being operable to perform the predetermined functions corresponding to the respective sequences of actuations of exposed ones of the keys, which are concealable by the extending portion, for a range of positions of the extending portion, wherein the plurality of keys include a first group of alphanumeric keys and a second group of control keys, and wherein the processor is operable to perform the predetermined function corresponding to at least one of the control keys for all positions of the extending portion including when the at least one control key is concealed by the extending portion, wherein the processor is operable to place the handset in an off-hook condition in response to the movement of the extending portion from the first position regardless of whether or not the extending portion has been moved to the second position.
