A reciprocating internal combustion engine using poppet valves, valve timing control and fuel injection, cuts off fuel during engine deceleration and controls valve timing such that charge is trapped in the engine cylinders while the fuel is shut off.

[ What is claimed is:] [1.] A multicylinder internal combustion engine, comprising:a crankshaft;a plurality of cylinders, with each having a piston reciprocably mounted therein and connected to the crankshaft for reciprocation;a plurality of intake poppet valves for allowing intake air to enter the cylinders;a plurality of exhaust poppet valves for allowing combustion products to leave the cylinders;a camshaft for powering said intake valves and said exhaust valves;a phaser for controlling the timing of said camshaft without changing the valve overlap period;a plurality of fuel injectors for supplying fuel to the cylinders; anda controller for operating the phaser and the fuel injectors such that when the engine is decelerating in speed, the controller will reduce the flow of fuel to the cylinders and adjust the timing of the camshaft such that there is no net flow of charge through the cylinders.
