A compound having the formula (R).sub.n Si(X).sub.4-n-y (R.sub.41).sub.y wherein n is an integer of from 0 to 3; y is an integer of from 1 to 4; each R is, independently, a nonhydrolizable organic group; each X is, independently, a hydrolyzable group; and each R.sub.41,

A compound having the formula (R).sub.n Si(X).sub.4-n-y (R.sub.41).sub.y wherein n is an integer of from 0 to 3; y is an integer of from 1 to 4; each R is, independently, a nonhydrolizable organic group; each X is, independently, a hydrolyzable group; and each R.sub.41, is, independently, a polyol containing at least three hydroxy groups, wherein all of the hydroxy groups are separated by at least three intervening atoms, and wherein the polyol is bonded to the Si by removal of the hydrogen from one of the at least three hydroxy groups such that the oxygen of the one of the at least three hydroxy groups is bonded to Si, wherein the polyol comprises(i) (HOCH.sub.2).sub.3 C(CH.sub.2).sub.n R.sub.17 ;(HOCH.sub.2).sub.3 C(aryl)R.sub.17 ; or(HOCH.sub.2).sub.3 C(benzyl)R.sub.17wherein n is an integer of from 0 to 4;R.sub.17 is a functional group comprising --COOH, --P(O)(OH).sub.2, --SO.sub.3 H, --B(OH).sub.2, --P(O)(OH), or --P(O)(OH)(OR.sub.18),where R.sub.18 is a branched or unbranched alkyl group or perfluoroalkyl group having from 1 to 22 carbon atoms; an aryl group; a heteroaryl group; or a polyether,wherein any hydrogen of a selected hydroxy group on the functional group can be replaced with Na.sup.+, K.sup.+, NH.sub.4.sup.+, Mg.sup.2+, Ca.sup.2+, or N(R.sub.70).sub.4.sup.+,wherein R.sub.70 is a branched or unbranched alkyl group or perfluoroalkyl group having from 1 to 22 carbon atoms; an aryl group; a heteroaryl group; or a polyether; or(ii) (HOCH.sub.2).sub.3 CN.sup.+ (R.sub.14)(R.sub.15)(R.sub.16)U.sup.-wherein R.sub.14 and R.sub.15 are, independently, H, --O--, or alkyl of from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, unsubstituted or substituted with OH, piperazine, morpholine, a polyalkylether, or benzyl; R.sub.16 is H, phenyl or alkyl of from 1 to 22 carbons, unsubstituted or substituted with OH, phenyl-, or a polyalkylether; and U is halogen, sulfate, tosylate or carboxylate, a polycarboxylate salt, functionalized carboxylate, an alkyl or arylsulfonate salt, a phosphate or phosphonate salt, or a borate or boronate; or(iii) pentaerythritol, dipentaerythritol, tripentaerythritol, tetrapentaerythritol, or tris(hydroxymethyl)nitromethane; or(iv) tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride.
