The mechanism (7) includes a pivoting part (10) pivotably mounted on the cover (2) of the container (1). When the container (1) is tilted, the pivoting part (10) moves from a locked position to an unlocked position by force of gravity. The pivoting part (10) includes a lower arm (13) capable of engaging a catch member such as a lug (16) when the cover (2) is closed and when the pivoting part is in a position to lock the cover. The invention further relates to a container (1) equipped with such a locking mechanism (7).
