A reduction-treated copper-based catalyst obtained by reducing a copper-based catalyst with hydrogen in the presence of a liquid phase and a process for producing .alpha.-phenylethyl alcohol, which comprises hydrogenating acetophenone in the presence of the same.

A process for producing .alpha.-phenylethyl alcohol, which comprises reducing a copper-based catalyst comprising 10 to 90% by weight of CuO with hydrogen in the presence of a liquid medium to obtain a reduced copper-base catalyst, and subsequently contacting said reduced catalyst with acetophenone under hydrogenation conditions to produce .alpha.-phenylethyl alcohol.
