The inner and outer housings are spaced so as to define a zone therebetween within which air is forced to flow in order to cool the contents of the receptacle. Inlet vents are provided in the inner housing to permit a portion of the cooling air to flow directly into the food receptacle, while the remainder of the air flow is directed about the inner housing for indirect cooling of the contents in the food receptacle.

In a refrigerator including a fresh food compartment, a food storage system comprising:an enclosure defined by inner and outer housings, said inner housing including a top wall, a bottom wall, side walls, a rear wall, and an open frontal portion, said outer housing extending about at least a portion of the inner housing, said inner housing being formed with an inlet opening; an air flow system for developing a flow of cooling air between the inner and outer housings within the enclosure, with a portion of the flow of cooling air being directed into the inlet opening and a remainder of the flow of cooling air being directed about portions of the inner housing; and a food receptacle received within the open frontal portion of the inner housing and mounted for selective sliding movement into and out of the enclosure, said food receptacle being in fluid communication with the inlet opening so as to receive the portion of the flow of cooling air, wherein food items placed in the food receptacle are directly cool by the portion of the flow of cooling air entering the food receptacle and indirectly cooled by the remainder of the flow of cooling air directed about the inner housing.
