The invention provides an improved heat exchanger and/or fluid mixing means which comprises a bonded stack of plates, the stack comprising at least one group of main perforated plates (10, P, R), wherein at least two adjacent plates (P, R) of the group of main perforated plates have their perforations (11) aligned in rows with continuous ribs (13) between adjacent rows, and the adjacent plates (P, R) are aligned whereby the rows of perforations (11) in one plate (P) overlap in the direction of the rows with the rows of perforations (11) of an adjacent plate (R) and the ribs (13) of adjacent plates lie in correspondence with each other to provide discrete fluid channels (30) extending across the plates, a channel (30) corresponding to each row of perforations (11), the channels together forming one or more fluid passageways (61, 67) across the plates and the passageway(s) (61) in the group of main perforated plates being separated from passageway(s) (67) in any adjacent group of perforated plates by an intervening plate (TS).

1. A heat exchanger or fluid mixing means comprising a bonded stack of plates, the bonded stack of plates comprising at least one group of perforated plates, at least two adjacent plates of each group of perforated plates having perforations aligned in rows and continuous ribs between adjacent rows,
1. A heat exchanger or fluid mixing means comprising a bonded stack of plates, the bonded stack of plates comprising at least one group of perforated plates, at least two adjacent plates of each group of perforated plates having perforations aligned in rows and continuous ribs between adjacent rows, the at least two adjacent plates being aligned so that the rows of perforations in one plate overlap in the direction along which the rows extend with the rows of perforations of an adjacent plate, and the ribs of adjacent plates lie in correspondence with each other to provide discrete fluid channels that correspond to each row of perforations, the channels together forming one or more fluid passageways across the at least two plates and each passageway in the group of perforated plates being separated from each passageway in any adjacent group of perforated plates by an intervening plate that has holes extending through its thickness, the holes being of size, number and position to control mixing of fluids flowing in a passageway on one side of the intervening plate with fluids flowing in a passageway on an opposite side of the intervening plate. 2. A heat exchanger or fluid mixing means according to claim 1, wherein the perforations of the perforated plates are elongated slots. 3. A heat exchanger or fluid mixing means according to claim 1, wherein the perforations at an end of a row of perforations are shaped to turn their respective channels through an angle whereby the passageways defined by the channels continue in a different direction. 4. A heat exchanger or fluid mixing means according to claim 3, wherein the perforations at the end of a row of perforations are "L" or "V" shaped. 5. A heat exchanger or fluid mixing means according to claim 4, wherein the perforated plates are square or rectangular and have first, second, third and fourth edges, each row of perforations comprising a row of slots extending from the first edge towards the third edge for substantially the whole length of the second edge, and first and second L-shaped slots adjacent the third edge, the first L-shaped slot serving to turn each row so that it extends in a direction parallel to the third edge and the second L-shaped slot serving to turn each row back towards the first edge. 6. A heat exchanger or fluid mixing means according to claim 1, wherein the rows of perforations in the group of plates are photochemically etched through the plates. 7. A heat exchanger or fluid mixing means according to claim 1, wherein heat exchange plates are positioned adjacent a first or second group of perforated plates and are separated therefrom by an unperforated plate whereby heat exchange fluid may be passed over the heat exchange plates. 8. A heat exchanger or fluid mixing means according to claim 1, wherein the plates are provided at edges thereof with extensions in the form of lugs to assist location of the plates when being stacked together, the lugs having a line of weakness whereby they may be broken off from the plates. 9. A heat exchanger or fluid mixing means according to claim 1, wherein the plates are provided at edges thereof with one or more extensions in the form of loops, each loop defining an aperture at the edge of a plate, whereby the apertures of adjacent plates from one or more tanks when the plates are stacked together, and inlets and outlets to the passageways defined by the plates are provided through the tanks. 10. A heat exchanger or fluid mixing means according to claim 1, wherein the plates are thin sheets of metal of 0.5 mm thickness or less and are bonded together by brazing or diffusion bonding. 11. A heat exchanger or fluid mixing means according to claim 1 wherein the plates are constructed of a material selected from a group consisting of stainless steel, aluminum, copper, titanium or alloys thereof.
