The invention provides improved structures, systems, and methods for supporting the optical elements of a microscope relative to the optical train of a laser surgery system. As the field of view of the microscope is substantially fully determined by the position of the objective lens, the laser delivery optics and the microscope can be aligned with a target location of the patient's eye by accurately aligning just the objective lens with the delivery optics. By structurally separating the objective lens from the other optical components of the microscope, and by maintaining accurate alignment between the objective lens and the laser delivery optics with a simple, tight-tolerance support structure, the remaining optical components of the microscope can be allowed to "float" relative to the objective lens with a looser-tolerance without degrading the operator's ability to align, observe, and optically direct an ophthalmic laser procedure.

The bioptome of claim 10, wherein movement of said sleeve relative to said jaw assembly causes said at least one of said arms having an angled portion to flex at said bent portion. 12. The bioptome of claim 10, wherein movement of said sleeve relative to said jaw assembly causes said at least one of said arms having an angled portion to flex proximal of said bent portion. 13. The bioptome of claim 10, wherein said second member is a control member extending through said first member, and said sleeve is coupled to said control member. 14. The bioptome of claim 10, wherein said closing portion includes a closing cam having a ramped portion that engages said sleeve. 15. The bioptome of claim 10, wherein said closing portion is a raised bump on an outer surface of the jaw cup. 16. The bioptome of claim 10, wherein said jaw cup has a cutting edge and said cutting edge substantially lies in a plane which intersects a plane in which said angled portion substantially lies. 17. A flexible bioptome, comprising: a first elongate flexible member and a second elongate flexible member, each member having a proximal end and a distal end; a sleeve having a longitudinal axis, said sleeve being coupled to said distal end of one of said first member and said second member; a jaw assembly coupled to said distal end of the other of said first member and said second member; and an actuator coupled to said proximal ends of said first and second members for relatively displacing said sleeve and said jaw assembly, wherein, said jaw assembly includes at least two arms, at least one of said arms having an angled portion that extends at an angle from said longitudinal axis of said sleeve to a jaw cup, said jaw cup having a closing portion for engagement by said sleeve during a portion of said relative displacement of said sleeve and said jaw assembly, said engagement of said closing portion by said sleeve for facilitating the movement of said at least two arms towards each other, wherein said sleeve is prevented from moving distally relative to said jaw assembly by said engagement of said sleeve with said closing portion. 18. The bioptome of claim 17, wherein said second member is a control member extending through said first member, and said sleeve is coupled to said control member. 19. The bioptome of claim 17, wherein said closing portion includes a closing cam having a ramped portion that engages said sleeve. 20. The bioptome of claim 17, wherein said closing portion is a raised bump on an outer surface of the jaw cup. 21. The bioptome of claim 17, wherein said jaw cup has a cutting edge and said cutting edge substantially lies in a plane which intersects a plane in which said angled portion substantially lies. 22. A flexible bioptome, comprising: a first elongate flexible member and a second elongate flexible member, each member having a proximal end and a distal end; a sleeve having a longitudinal axis, said sleeve being coupled to said distal end of one of said first member and said second member; a jaw assembly coupled to said distal end of the other of said first member and said second member; and an actuator coupled to said proximal ends of said first and second members for relatively displacing said sleeve and said jaw assembly, wherein, said jaw assembly includes at least two arms, at least one of said arms having an angled portion that extends at an angle from said longitudinal axis of said sleeve to a jaw cup, said jaw cup having a closing portion for engagement by said sleeve during a portion of said relative displacement of said sleeve and said jaw assembly, said engagement of said closing portion by said sleeve for facilitating the movement of said at least two arms towards each other, wherein said sleeve includes a sharp distal edge. 23.
