A method of making a magnetic cooling system comprising: providing a first magnetocaloric material of a first type; providing a second magnetocaloric material of the first type; providing a first microelectromechanical switch between the first magnetocaloric material and a heat source; providing a second microelectromechanical switch between the first and second magnetocaloric materials; providing a third microelectromechanical switch between the second magnetocaloric materials; wherein heat is transferred through the first and second magnetocaloric materials from the heat source to the heat sink by selective application of magnetic fields to the first and second magnetocaloric materials and by selective operation of the first, second, and third microelectromechanical switches. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the first microelectromechanical switch is one of a microrelay, a reed switch, or a gate switch. 15. The method of claim 13, wherein the first microelectromechanical switch comprises a thermal conduction element for conducting heat from a heat source to a heat sink. 16. The method of claim 13, further comprising providing an electromagnet the generates the magnetic field to cause the first magnetocaloric material to generate heat. 17. A method of making a magnetic cooling system comprising: providing a magnetocaloric material; and providing at least one microelectromechanical switch for switching between a heat rejection and heat absorption phase of a magnetic cooling cycle, wherein when the magnetocaloric material is heated by the presence of a magnetic field, the at least one microelectromechanical switch operates to allow heat rejection from the magnetocaloric material to a heat sink, and wherein when the magnetic field is removed from the magnetocaloric material, the at least one microelectromechanical switch operates to allow heat absorption from a heat source; wherein providing the at least one microelectromechanical switch includes providing one or more redundant microelectromechanical switches such that the one or more redundant microelectromechanical switches assumes the operation of a microelectromechanical switch in the event of a failure of the microelectromechanical switch. 18. The method of claim 13, further comprising providing a control system that is programmed to provide a particular switching rate for the first, second, and third microelectromechanical switches. 19. The method of claim 13, wherein the cascaded system is a stacked cascaded system. 20. The method of claim 13, further comprising: providing at least one permanent magnet; and providing a mechanism for moving the permanent magnet into and our of functional proximity to the first magnetocaloric material. 21. A method of making a magnetic cooling system comprising: providing a magnetocaloric material; and providing at least one microelectromechanical switch for switching between a heat rejection and heat absorption phase of a magnetic cooling cycle, wherein when the magnetocaloric material is heated by the presence of a magnetic field, the a
