Workstation, apparatuses and methods for the high-throughput synthesis, screening and/or characterization of combinatorial libraries. The invention relates to an array, which permits various high-throughput methods for synthesis, screening and/or characterization in the same array, without requiring sample transfer from the array. In a preferred embodiment, the synthesis, screening, and/or characterization steps are carried out in a highly parallel fashion, where more than one compound is synthesized, screened, and/or characterized at the same time. The invention may be practiced at the microscale. The array may comprise thermal channels, for regulating the temperature of the wells in the array. The wells of the array may comprise a membrane, which is used in various screening and characterization methods. The invention also relates to a covered array, comprising the array and an array cover, as well as an apparatus comprising the array, which comprises the array, an array cover and a stage. The array, array cover, and the stage may be modified as required for a variety of synthesis and/or analysis techniques. The array is easily interchangeable between different analytical instruments, and in an embodiment, the invention relates to an automated workstation, where the array is transferred between different synthesis, screening, and characterization stations. The invention also relates to a variety of methods for synthesis, screening, and characterization, which are adapted for combinatorial chemistry. Any of the embodiments of the invention may be used either alone or taken in various combinations.

1. An instrument for characterizing a property of at least one compound, said instrument comprising: (a) an array comprising a substrate having a plurality of wells wherein at least one well comprises a membrane forming the bottom of the well, the membrane having a reflective coating; (b) a vibration detector; (c) means for causing the reflective membrane to vibrate; and optionally, (d) a stage for supporting (a), (b) and (c) above. 2. An instrument according to claim 1, wherein the means for causing the reflective membrane to vibrate comprises electrostatic means. 3. An instrument according to claim 1, wherein the vibration detector is a fiber optic detector. 4. A process of characterizing at least one compound, comprising the steps of: (a) providing an array, wherein the array comprises a substrate having a plurality of wells, wherein at least one well contains at least one compound, and wherein the at least one well containing the compound comprises a membrane forming the bottom of the well, the membrane having a reflective coating thereon; (b) placing the array upon a stage including a vibration detector; (c) causing the reflective membrane to vibrate; and (d) measuring the amplitude and/or the frequency of the vibrations of the membrane. 5. The process according to claim 4, further comprising the step of calculating the viscosity of the compound from the measurement in step (d). 6. The process according to claim 4, further comprising the step of calculating the stiffness of the compound from the measurement in step (d). 7. The process according to claim 4, further comprising the step of calculating the heat deflection temperature of the compound from the measurement in step (d). 8. The process according to claim 4, further comprising the step of calculating the softening point of the compound from the measurement in step (d). 9. The process according to claim 4, wherein the compound is a polymer and the measuring step is conducted at a temperature below the softening point of the polymer. 10. The process according to claim 4, wherein the measuring step is conducted at a constant temperature with respect to alternating electrostatic potential. 11. The process according to claim 4, wherein the measuring step is conducted while applying an alternating potential and changing the temperature of the well array; and detecting the temperature at which the mode of the membrane vibration changes. 12. The process according to claim 4, wherein the measuring step is conducted at a temperature greater than the melting point of the compound. 13. The process according to claim 12, wherein the compound is a polymer. 14. A combinatorial process for the synthesis and characterization of at least one compound, comprising the steps of: (a) providing an array wherein the array comprises a substrate having a plurality of wells, wherein at least one well comprises a membrane forming the bottom of the well, the membrane having a reflective coating; (b) introducing at least one reagent into at least one of the wells; (c) reacting the reagent in the well to form at least one compound; (d) placing the array on a stage having an analytical instrument; (e) causing the reflective membrane in said well containing said compound to vibrate; and (f) measuring the amplitude and/or frequency of the vibration of the reflective membrane.
