Disclosed and claimed are cocoa extracts, compounds, combinations thereof and compositions containing the same, such as polyphenols or procyanidins, methods for preparing such extracts, compounds and compositions, as well as uses for them, especially a polymeric compound of the formula An,wherein A is a monomer of the formula: wherein n is an integer from 2 to 18, such that there is at least one terminal monomeric unit A, and one or a plurality of additional monomeric units; R is 3-(α)-OH, 3-(β)-OH, 3-(α)-O-sugar, or 3-(β)-O-sugar.

A method of therapeutic or prophylactic treatment comprising increasing nitric oxide synthesis by administering to a subject in need thereof a composition comprising an effective amount of a polymeric compound of the formula Anor a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof: wherein n is an integer from 2 to 18, such that there is at least one terminal monomeric unit A, and one or a plurality of additional monomeric units; R is 3-(α)-OH, 3-(β)-OH, 3-(α)-O-sugar, or 3-(β)-O-sugar; bonding between adjacent monomers takes place at positions selected from the group consisting of 4, 6 and 8; a bond of an additional monomeric unit in position 4 has alpha or beta stereochemistry; X, Y and Z are selected from the group consisting of monomeric unit A, hydrogen, and a sugar, with the provisos that as to the at least one terminal monomeric unit, bonding of the additional monomeric unit thereto is at position 4 and optionally Y=Z=hydrogen; the sugar is optionally substituted with a phenolic moiety; and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or excipient; wherein the subject is a human or a veterinary animal. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein n is 2 to 10. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the adjacent monomers bind at positions 4→6 or 4→8. 4. The method of claim 2, wherein the subject is a human. 5. The method of claim 2, wherein the subject is a veterinary animal. 6. The method of claim 4, wherein the human is suffering from NO affected hypercholesterolemia. 7. The method of claim 4, wherein the human is at risk of artherosclerosis, thrombosis, heart attack, stroke or vascular circulation problems. 8. The method of claim 4, wherein the human is suffering from atherosclerosis. 9. The method of claim 4, wherein the nitric oxide synthesis is increased by inducing iNOS in the subject. 10. The method of claim 5, wherein oxide synthesis is increased by inducing iNOS in the subject. 11. A method of therapeutic or prophylactic treatment comprising increasing nitric oxide synthesis by administering to a subject in need thereof a composition comprising an effective amount of at least one of the following: epicatechin, procyanidin dimer B2, procyanidin dimer B5, and procyanidin trimer C1, wherein the subject is a human or a veterinary animal. 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the subject is a human. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the human is at risk of artherosclerosis, thrombosis, heart attack, stroke or vascular circulation problems. 14. The method of claim 12, wherein the human is suffering from artherosclerosis. 15. The method of claim 12, wherein the human is suffering from NO affected hypercholesterolemia. 16. The method of claim 11, wherein the nitric oxide synthesis is increased by inducing the inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase in the subject. 17. The method of claim 12, wherein the nitric oxide synthesis is increased by inducing the inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase in the subject. 18. The method of claim 11, wherein epicatechin, procyanidin dimer B2, procyanidin dimer B5, or procyanidin trimer C1 is in the form of a cocoa extract. 19. The method of claim 11, wherein epicatechin, procyanidin dimer B2, procyanidin dimer B5, or procyanidin trimer C1 is in the form of a cocoa extract fraction. 20. The method of claim 12, wherein the composition comprises an effective amount of epicatechin. 21. The method of claim 12, wherein the composition comprises an effective amount of procyanidin dimer B2. 22. The method of claim 12, wherein the composition comprises an effective amount of procyanidin dimer B5. 23. The method of claim 12, wherein the composition comprises an effective amount of procyanidin trimer C1. 24. The method of claim 11, wherein the composition further comprises a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. 25. The method of claim 11, wherein the composition is a food. 26. The method of claim 11, wherein the composition is a dietary supplement.
