The instrument holder of claim 1, wherein the electrically conductive wire contracts when connected to an electric power source. 17. The instrument holder of claim 1, wherein the electrically conductive wire comprises a shape memory alloy. 18. The instrument holder of claim 17, further comprising a tensioning mechanism for applying a tension force to the electrically conductive wire. 19. The instrument holder of claim 17, wherein the electrically conductive wire comprises a tungsten-nickel alloy. 20.
