A process of casting a molten metal to form a cast metal strip ingot while controlling heat flux from the cast metal. The process comprises continuously supplying molten metal to a casting cavity formed between a pair of moving continuous casting surfaces that withdraw heat from the molten metal to cause metal solidification, and continuously withdrawing a resulting cast strip ingot from the casting cavity. A gas (e.g. air) containing water vapour substantially without liquid water (i.e. a moist gas) is supplied to the inlet of the casting cavity in a region containing the meniscus formed where the molten metal first contacts the casting surfaces. The moist gas has the effect of adjusting the heat withdrawal by the casting surfaces to minimize surface defects in the cast strip ingot and to avoid undesired distortion of the casting cavity. Furthermore, in those cases where a parting agent is applied to the casting surfaces, the amount of parting agent applied to the casting surfaces may be reduced. The invention also relates to equipment provided for the delivery and dewpoint control of the moist gas.

Apparatus for casting a molten metal to form a cast strip ingot, comprising: a pair of moving continuous casting elements arranged to form a casting cavity between opposed casting surfaces of said casting elements;a nozzle for continuously introducing molten metal into said casting cavity and forming a meniscus where said molten metal first contacts said casting surfaces; andequipment for producing a gas containing water vapour substantially without liquid water and for delivering said gas to a region of said meniscus.2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said equipment includes a mixer for mixing dry gas and steam to produce said gas containing water vapour.3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said equipment contains a detector for measuring temperature and water content of said gas containing water vapour, and a calculator for calculating a dewpoint of the gas containing water vapour from said measured temperature and water content.4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein said equipment contains controls for adjusting amounts of dry gas and steam mixed by said mixer according to signals produced by said calculator to produce said gas containing water vapour having a predetermined dewpoint.5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said mixer mixes said dry gas and water vapour external to the region of the meniscus.6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said equipment for producing a gas containing water vapour includes means for varying a dew point of said gas.7. The apparatus of claim 6, further including cooling means for withdrawing heat from said casting cavity, means for assessing a heat withdrawal rate from at least part of said casting cavity, and means for varying said dew point of said gas delivered to said region of said meniscus in accordance with said assessed heat withdrawal rate to exert control on said heat withdrawal rate.8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein said cooling means comprises cooling water supplied to said casting elements, and said means for assessing a heat withdrawal rate comprises means for measuring a flow rate of said cooling water, means for measuring a temperature of said water before and after contacting said casting elements, and means for computing said heat withdrawal rate from a flow rate and temperatures measured by said means.9. The apparatus of claim 8, further including a controller for controlling said means for varying a dew point of said gas.10. The apparatus or claim 9, wherein said controller is operated automatically according to signals received from said means for computing said heat withdrawal rate.11. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said controller is operated manually according to signals received from said means for computing said heat withdrawal rate.12. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said mixer mixes said dry gas and steam within said region of the meniscus.13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said casting elements comprise endless casting belts.14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said casting elements comprise recirculating casting blocks.15. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said casting elements comprise a rotating casting wheel and a moving casting belt.16. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said casting surfaces are textured or roughened.17. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said nozzle has opposite sides facing said opposite casting surfaces, said nozzle tapering to an elongated orifice at a nozzle tip, and wherein said opposite sides of said nozzle have outlets adjacent to said tip for supplying said gas to said region of the meniscus.18. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said equipment comprises a heated porous block positioned adjacent to said region of the meniscus, and means for supplying water to said porous block.19. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said equipment includes a heat exchanger operating from removing excess water from the said gas containing water vapour.
