A method for polishing an end face of an optical fiber according to claim 11; wherein the step of acquiring an image of the free end of the optical fiber comprises the step moving the retaining jig from a first position at which the end face is urged against the polishing member to a second position at which the end face is disposed proximate an image sensor of the inspection unit while the optical fiber is retained by the retaining jig.13. A method for polishing an end face according to claim 12; wherein the step of determining a position of the optical fiber core is performed based on a symmetric property revealed by the image.14. A method for polishing an end face according to claim 12; wherein the step of passing light through the optical fiber comprises passing laser beam light through the optical fiber.
