Methods of treatment of cyanide-containing waste are provided. In particular, methods for treatment of spent potliner prior to landfill disposal are provided. These methods, which involve treatment of the waste with a mixture containing an aqueous oxidizing solution containing an agent, such as a metal chloride, that increases the oxidation potential of the solution, can be performed at ambient temperature and pressure.

A method for destroying cyanide in spent potliner, comprising:(i) crushing the spent potliner; and(ii) contacting the crushed spent potliner, at ambient temperature and pressure, with an aqueous oxidizing solution that contains a sufficient amount of oxidizing agent to lower the total cyanide concentration present in the spent potliner. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the total cyanide concentration following step (ii) is less than about 590 ppm total cyanide. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the spent potliner is crushed to fine powder. 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:measuring the oxidation potential of the resulting mixture following a treatment of the spent potliner; andif the oxidation potential indicates cyanide concentration present in the spent potliner is greater than a predetermined concentration, adding additional aqueous oxidizing solution until the concentration is less than the predetermined concentration. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein if a measured oxidation potential of an aqueous oxidizing waste mixture following treatment of spent potliner is less than about 400 mv, additional aqueous oxidizing solution is added to bring the measured oxidation potential to about 400 mv. 6. A method of treatment of solid hazardous waste containing a cyanide to destroy cyanide, comprising:treating the waste with an aqueous oxidizing solution and an agent that enhances the oxidation potential of the oxidizing solution, wherein the treating step is performed at ambient temperature and pressure. 7. A method for treating solid cyanide-containing material to destroy cyanides, comprising:contacting the material with a sufficient amount of a mixture containing a metal chloride and an aqueous oxidizing solution for a sufficient amount of time to reduce the cyanide concentration in the solid material, wherein the cyanide-containing material is spent potliner and the contacting step is performed at ambient temperature and pressure. 8. A method for treating solid spent potliner to destroy cyanides, comprising:crushing the spent potliner to a powder prior to treatment;contacting the spent potliner, at ambient temperature and pressured, with a sufficient amount of a mixture containing a metal chloride and an aqueous oxidizing solution for a sufficient amount of time to reduce the cyanide concentration in the solid spent potliner, wherein if a measured oxidation potential of an aqueous oxidizing waste mixture following the treatment of spent potliner is less than about 400 mv, an additional quantity of the aqueous oxidizing solution is added to bring the measured oxidation potential to about 400 mv. 9. The method of claim 7, further comprising:measuring the oxidation potential of the mixture; and optionally, adding additional aqueous oxidizing solution of the oxidation potential indicates total cyanide concentration present in the spent potliner is greater than about 590 ppm. 10. A method for treating solid cyanide-containing material to destroy cyanides, comprising:contacting the material, with a sufficient amount of a mixture containing a metal chloride and an aqueous oxidizing solution for a sufficient amount of time to reduce the cyanide concentration in the solid material, wherein the contacting step is performed at ambient temperature and pressure.
