A deep water support platform, suitable for use as a hydrocarbon exploration or production facility in very deep waters of 10,000 ft or more is presented. The platform is attached to the floor of the ocean with a buoyant pile that includes buoyant members attached about the periphery of the pile. The buoyant pile and buoyant members include tubular members that can be filled with water, oil, air or other materials to produce a structure that has improved buoyancy and stability over prior platforms. Embodiments include configurations of buoyant members that have constant and equal diameter and spacing, and other configurations where the diameter and/or spacing of the buoyant members changes along the pile. In addition, the buoyant members are arranged about the pile to reduce vortex induced vibrations on the platform by interfering with current flow about the support structure.

1. A deep-water support system for anchoring to the floor of a body of water and supporting a structure adjacent to the surface of the body of water at a pre-selected site, comprising:a single buoyant leg structure (BLS) comprising a tubular member including a lower portion having a first end adapted for anchoring to the bottom of said body of water, an upper portion having a second end extending above the water surface and provide support for mounting said structure, and a bulkhead between said lower portion and said upper portion, where said upper portion is at least partially filled with a buoyant material and where said lower portion is not buoyant; andat least three buoyant members each connected to said upper portion and extending above said bulkhead, and at least partially filled with buoyant material, and where at least one of said buoyant members extends above the surface of said body of water and provides further support for mounting said structure, said buoyant members having a length that is less than half of the length of the BLS,where, when said deep-water support system is anchored at said pre-selected site, said upper portion is substantially in compression, said lower portion is substantially in tension, and said at least three buoyant members act to increase the buoyancy of said deep-water support system at a point above said bulkhead. 2. The deep-water support system of claim 1, wherein said BLS has a cross-sectional area that is larger near the top of the BLS than near its bottom. 3. The deep-water support system of claim 2, wherein said BLS has at least one step-wise change in cross-sectional diameter. 4. The deep water support system of claim 1, wherein said upper portion can move horizontally, and wherein said lower portion is flexible to allow said upper portion to remain substantially vertical during horizontal movement of said upper portion. 5. The deep-water support system of claim 1, wherein said at least three buoyant members are generally parallel with said upper portion of said BLS. 6. The deep water support system of claim 1, wherein said at least three buoyant members and upper portion are mutually separated and are connected by spacing members. 7. The deep water support system of claim 6, wherein said spacing members include horizontal spacers and vertical spacing members. 8. The deep-water support system of claim 6, wherein at least one of said spacing members cooperate with said connected at least three buoyant members and said connected upper portion to form a truss. 9. The deep-water support system of claim 1, wherein said lower portion of said BLS comprises a plurality of connected elongated tubular members. 10. The deep-water support system of claim 1, wherein each of said at least three buoyant members is tubular and has a circular cross-sectional shape. 11. The deep-water support system of claim 1, wherein each of said at least three buoyant members is tubular and has a polygon cross-sectional shape. 12. The deep-water support system of claim 1, wherein, at least one of said buoyant members does not extend above the surface of said body of water. 13. The deep-water support system of claim 1 wherein multiple buoyant members extend above the surface of said body of water and provide support to a structure mounted thereon. 14. A deep-water support system for anchoring to the floor of a body of water and supporting a structure adjacent to the surface of the body of water at a pre-selected site, comprising:a single buoyant leg structure (BLS) comprising at least one tubular member, said BLS including a lower portion having a lower end adapted for anchoring to the bottom of said body of water, an upper portion, and a bulkhead between said lower portion and said upper portion, where said upper portion is at least partially filled with a buoyant material and where said lower portion is not buoyant; andat least three buoyant members connected to said upper portion and extending above the surfa ce of said body of water and adapted to provide support for a platform, said buoyant members each having a length that is less than half of the overall length of the BLS,where, when said deep-water support system is anchored at said pre-selected site, said upper portion is substantially in compression, said lower portion is substantially in tension, and said at least three buoyant members act to increase the buoyancy of said deep-water support system at a point above said bulkhead.
