A nonwoven fabric, comprising:fibrous material, and a binder material comprising a binder composition comprising an ion-sensitive polymer comprising a first repeat unit derived from a monomer selected from styrenesulfonic acid (SS), a sodium salt of styrenesulfonic acid (NaSS), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), a sodium salt of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (NaAMPS), vinylsulfonic acid, a sodium salt of vinylsulfonic acid, and combinations thereof; a second repeat unit derived from a monomer selected from acrylic acid, a sodium salt of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, a sodium salt of methacrylic acid, and combinations thereof; and a third repeat unit derived from a monomer selected from at least one alkyl acrylate, at least one alkyl methacrylate, and combination thereof; wherein the fabric is not substantially water-dispersible in a neutral salt solution containing at least about 0.3 weight percent salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; and the fabric is substantially water-dispersible in tap water containing one or more multivalent ions. 2. A method of making an ion-sensitive polymer, comprising:forming a hydrophilically/hydrophobically balanced mixture of three or more monomers, wherein at least one monomer contains one or more hydrophilic moieties, and at least one monomer contains one or more hydrophobic moieties, and wherein the mixture comprises: AMPS or NaAMPS, acrylic acid, butyl acrylate, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate; and polymerizing the mixture; wherein the polymer is insoluble in neutral salt solution containing at least about 0.3 weight percent salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; and wherein the polymer is soluble in tap water containing one or more multivalent ions. 3. A nonwoven product comprising:at least about 50 weight percent fibers from about 0.1 to 15 m in length, and from about 5 to about 50 weight percent of a binder composition comprising an ion-sensitive polymer comprising a first repeat unit derived from a monomer selected from styrenesulfonic acid (SS), a sodium salt of styrenesulfonic acid (NaSS), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), a sodium salt f 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (NaAMPS), vinylsulfonic acid, a sodium salt of vinylsulfonic acid, and combinations thereof; a second repeat unit derived from a monomer selected from acrylic acid, a sodium salt of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, a sodium salt o methacrylic acid, and combinations thereof; and a third repeat unit derived from a monomer selected from at least one alkyl acrylate, at least one alkyl methacrylate, and combination thereof; wherein the product is not substantially water-dispersible in a salt solution having a multivalent ion concentration greater than about 500 ppm, further wherein the product is water-dispersible in a salt solution having a multivalent ion concentration less than about 200 ppm. 4. The nonwoven product of claim 3, wherein the binder composition comprises from about 10 to about 35 weight percent.5. The nonwoven product of claim 3, wherein the binder composition comprises from about 10 to about 25 weight percent.6. The nonwoven product of claim 3, wherein the fibers are about 0.2 to 6 mm in length.7. The nonwoven product of claim 3, further wherein the product has an in-use tensile strength of about 100 g/in, and a tensile strength of less than about 30 g/in after being soaked in water having a concentration of Ca2? and/or Mg2+ ions of about 50 ppm for about one hour.8. The nonwoven product of claim 3, further wherein the product has an in-use tensile strength of about 300 g/in, and a tensile strength of less than about 30 g/in after being soaked in water having a concentration of Ca2+ and/or Mg2+ ions of about 50 ppm for about one hour.9. The nonwoven product of claim 3, further wherein the product has an in-use tensile strength of about 200 g/in, and a tensile strength of less than about 20 g/in after being soaked in water having a concentration of Ca2+ and/or Mg2+ ions of about 200 ppm for about one hour.10. The nonwoven product of claim 3, further wherein the product has an in-use tensile strength of about 300 g/in, and a tensile strength of less than about 20 g/in after being soaked in water having a concentration of Ca2+ and/or Mg2+ ions of about 200 ppm for about one hour.11. A method of making an ion-sensitive polymer, comprising:forming a hydrophilically/hydrophobically balanced mixture of three or more monomers, wherein at least one monomer contains one or more hydrophilic moieties, and at least one monomer contains one or more hydrophobic moieties; wherein the monomer mixture comprises: a first monomer selected from styrenesulfonic acid (SS), a sodium salt of styrenesulfonic acid (NaSS), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), a sodium salt of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (NaAMPS), vinylsulfonic acid, a sodium salt of vinylsulfonic acid, and combinations thereof; a second monomer selected from acrylic acid, a sodium salt of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, a sodium salt of methacrylic acid, and combinations thereof; a third monomer selected from at least one alkyl acrylate, at least one alkyl methacrylate, and combinations thereof; and polymerizing the mixture; wherein the polymer is substantially insoluble in a neutral salt solution containing at least about 0.3 weight percent salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; and wherein the polymer is substantially soluble in tap water containing one or more multivalent ions. 12. The nonwoven fabric of claim 1, wherein the fabric is not substantially water-dispersible in a neutral salt solution containing from about 0.5 weight percent to about 5.0 weight percent of the salt.13. The nonwoven fabric of claim 1, wherein the fabric is not substantially water-dispersible in a neutral salt solution containing from about 1.5 weight percent to about 5.0 weight percent of the salt.14. The nonwoven fabric of claim 1, wherein the multivalent ions comprise Ca2+ ions, Mg2+ ions, Zn2+ ions, or a combination thereof.15. The nonwoven fabric of claim 1, wherein the monovalent ions comprise Na+ ions, Li+ ions, K+ ions, NH4+ ions, or a combination thereof.16. The nonwoven fabric of claim 1, wherein the polymer comprises repeat units derived from AMPS or NaAMPS; acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or a combination thereof; and one or more alkyl acrylates.17. The nonwoven fabric of claim 16, wherein the polymer comprises repeat units derived from AMPS or NaAMPS, acrylic acid butyl acrylate, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate.18. The nonwoven fabric of claim 17, wherein the polymer comprises from greater than 0 to about 10 mol % repeat units derived from AMPS or NaAMPS; from about 50 to less than 67 mol % repeat units derived from acrylic acid; from about 15 to about 28 mol % repeat units derived from butyl acrylate; and from a to 7 to about 15 mol % repeat units derived from 2-ethylhexyl acrylate.19. The nonwoven fabric of claim 18, wherein the polymer comprises from about 1 to about 6 mol % repeat units derived from AMPS or NaAMPS; from about 57 to less than 66 mol % repeat units derived from acrylic acid; from about 15 to about 28 mol % repeat units derived from butyl acrylate; and from about 7 to about 13 mol % repeat units derived from 2-ethylhexyl acrylate.20. The nonwoven fabric of claim 1, wherein the fabric is substantially water-dispersible in tap water containing from about 15 ppm to about 500 ppm of one or more multivalent ions.
