An edible product in accordance with the present invention involves an edible inner component made from a first material and an edible outer cover component substantially completely encapsulating the edible inner component. In one form of the invention, the inner component is in the form of a hairball treatment for cats and the outer component is a dough-like material. A system for producing the edible product includes a first material source for supplying a first edible material to form the inner component of the edible product, a second material source for supplying a second edible material to form the outer component of the edible product, and an extruder for continuously coextruding the first edible material and the edible second material to produce an elongated rope of edible product. A crimping apparatus receives the longitudinal rope extruded from the extruder for crimping the longitudinal rope to separate the longitudinal rope into individual edible products. A method for producing the edible product involves supplying the first and second edible materials to the extruder, and continuously coextruding the first and second materials as a longitudinal rope in which the first material is positioned within and surrounded by the second material. The longitudinal rope is cut at spaced apart locations as it is being extruded from the extruder to produce individual edible products each containing an inner component comprised of the first material and an outer cover component comprised of the second material that substantially completely surrounds the inner component, with the edible products being sealed at opposite ends.

The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the first pair of crimping elements are hemispherical crimping elements and the second pair of crimping elements are hemispherical crimping elements.3. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the supplying of the first edible material involves supplying a first material that is an emulsion containing malt syrup and at least one of mineral oil and petroleum jelly.4. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the supplying of the second edible material involves supplying a second material that includes soy flour and wheat flour.5. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the cutting of the longitudinal rope involves crimping the longitudinal rope to produce a seal on each end of the individual edible products that is located between top and bottom surfaces of the edible product.6. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the cutting of the longitudinal rope involves crimping the longitudinal rope to produce a seal on each end of the individual edible products that is located adjacent a bottom surface of the edible product.7. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the continuous coextruding of the longitudinal rope includes continuously coextruding a longitudinal rope having an oval-shape as seen in cross-section.8. A method for producing an edible product, comprising:continuously extruding a longitudinal rope of edible material comprising an inner edible component surrounded by an outer edible component; crimping the longitudinal rope at spaced apart intervals to sever the longitudinal rope at the spaced apart intervals and form individual edible products each containing the inner edible component within the outer edible component; the longitudinal rope being crimped by applying opposing crimping forces to the longitudinal rope at each of the spaced apart intervals; and maintaining the opposed crimping forces applied at one location while the opposed crimping forces are applied at an immediately next successive interval. 9. The method as set forth in claim 8, wherein two ropes of edible material are extruded, both of which are crimped at spaced apart intervals by applying the opposing crimping forces to the longitudinal ropes.10. The method as set forth in claim 8, wherein the opposed crimping forces are applied by opposing crimping elements moved into contacting engagement with one another at a nip region to crimp and sever the longitudinal rope into the individual edible products.11. The method as set forth in claim 10, wherein the opposing crimping elements are hemispherically shaped crimping elements mounted on respective rotary driven chains.12. The method as set forth in claim 11, including applying a force to at least one of the rotary driven chains to urge the crimping elements on the at least one rotary driven chain into contacting engagement with the crimping elements on the other rotary driven chain at the nip region.13. The method as set forth in claim 11, wherein a surface of at least some of the hemispherically shaped crimping elements which crimps the longitudinal rope includes a V-shaped region to facilitate severing of the longitudinal rope into the individual edible products.14. The method as set forth in claim 13, wherein the V-shaped region forms a part of a knurled surface on the hemispherically shaped crimping elements.15. A method for producing an edible product, comprising:rotary driving first and second continuous chains each provided with a plurality of crimping elements, the first and second chains being positioned relative to one another so that during rotary driving of the chains the crimping elements on the first and second chains move into opposing contacting engagement with one another in successively opposed pairs in a nip region, the opposed pairs being comprised of one of the crimping elements on the first chain and one of the crimping elements on the second chain; positioning a longitudinal rope of edible material relative to the first and second rotary driven chains so that a portion of the longitudinal rope of edible material is positioned in the nip region and is crimped at spaced apart intervals corresponding to the opposed pairs of crimping elements during rotary driving of the first and second continuous chains to sever the longitudinal rope of edible material at the spaced apart intervals to form individual edible products; the longitudinal rope of edible material comprising an inner edible component surrounded by an outer edible component, and the individual edible products each comprising the inner edible component within the outer edible component; aligning at least some of the opposed pairs of crimping elements in the nip region so that one of the crimping elements forming each of said opposed pairs is aligned with the other crimping element forming each of said opposed pairs. 16. The method as set forth in claim 15, including applying a force to at least one of the rotary driven continuous chains to urge the crimping elements on the at least one rotary driven continuous chain into contacting engagement with the crimping elements on the other rotary driven chain at the nip region.17. The method as set forth in claim 15, wherein the positioning of the longitudinal rope comprises positioning a pair of longitudinal ropes of edible material relative to the first and second rotary driven chains so that a portion of each longitudinal rope of edible material is positioned in the nip region and is crimped at spaced apart intervals.18. The method as set forth in claim 15, wherein two of the crimping elements of each chain form a crimping device, the two crimping elements forming each crimping device being attached to the chain by an attachment portion, the opposed pairs of crimping elements in the nip region being aligned by an alignment bar extending from at least some of the crimping devices, the alignment bar extending from one of the crimping devices on a first one of the chains being fitted between the two crimping elements forming a crimping device on a second one of the chains.19. The method as set forth in claim 18, wherein the alignment bar has a round cross-section.20. A method for producing an edible product, comprising:extruding a longitudinal rope of edible material comprising an inner edible component surrounded by an outer edible component, the longitudinal rope having a longitudinal extent; applying a crimping force to the longitudinal rope at spaced apart intervals along the longitudinal extent of the longitudinal rope to crimp the longitudinal rope at the spaced apart intervals and define a plurality of edible products each having closed ends and containing the inner edible component within the outer edible component; the longitudinal rope being crimped at each of the spaced apart intervals by moving crimping elements into contacting engagement with the longitudinal rope at the spaced apart intervals along the longitudinal extent of the longitudinal rope so Chat more than two of the crimping elements are in contacting engagement with the longitudinal rope at the spaced apart intervals at the same time. 21. The method as set forth in claim 20, wherein the crimping elements are mounted on a chain that passes around a pair of sprockets, each of the sprockets having a respective rotation axis, and the rotation axis of each of the two sprockets being spaced apart from one another, and comprising rotating one of the sprockets to move the chain.22. The method as set forth in claim 20, wherein the crimping elements constitute first crimping elements, and including second crimping elements, the longitudinal rope being crimped at each of the spaced apart intervals by crimping the longitudinal rope between one of the first crimping elements and one of the second crimping elements.23. The method as set forth in claim 20, wherein the step of extruding a longitudinal rope of edible material comprises extruding a pair of longitudinal ropes of edible material, and the step of applying a crimping force to the longitudinal rope at spaced apart intervals along the longitudinal extent of the longitudinal rope to crimp the longitudinal rope at the spaced apart intervals comprises applying a crimping force to both of the longitudinal ropes at spaced apart intervals along the longitudinal extent of the longitudinal ropes to crimp the longitudinal ropes at the spaced apart intervals.24. The method as set forth in claim 20, wherein the crimping elements constitute first crimping elements mounted on a first chain, and including second crimping elements mounted on a second chain, the longitudinal rope being crimped at each of the spaced apart intervals by crimping the longitudinal rope between spaced apart nips formed by one of the first crimping elements and one of the second crimping elements.25. The method as set forth in claim 24, further comprising biasing at least a portion of the first chain towards the second chain to urge the crimping elements towards one another in at least one of the nips.26. A method for producing an edible product, comprising:extruding a longitudinal rope of edible material comprising an inner edible component surrounded by an outer edible component, the longitudinal rope having a longitudinal extent; crimping the longitudinal rope at spaced apart intervals along the longitudinal extent of the longitudinal rope to define a plurality of edible products each having closed ends and containing the inner edible component within the outer edible component; the longitudinal rope being crimped at each of the spaced apart intervals by bringing crimping elements into contacting engagement with the longitudinal rope at the spaced apart locations along the longitudinal extent of the longitudinal rope, the crimping elements being provided on a chain which passes around two rotatable members each having a rotation axis, the rotation axis of each of the two rotatable members being spaced apart from one another. 27. The method as set forth in claim 26, wherein the longitudinal rope is fed between the crimping elements and a belt so that the longitudinal rope is crimped between the belt and the crimping elements.28. The method as set forth in claim 26, wherein the crimping elements constitute first crimping elements, and including second crimping elements mounted on a chain passes around two rotatable members having rotation axes that are spaced apart from one another, the longitudinal rope being crimped at each of the spaced apart intervals by crimping the longitudinal rope between spaced apart nips formed by one of the first crimping elements and one of the second crimping elements.29. The method as set forth in claim 28, wherein pairs of the first crimping elements form first crimping devices and pairs of the second crimping elements form second crimping devices, and comprising an alignment bar extending from at least some of the first crimping devices, each alignment bar being fitted between the pair of crimping elements forming one of the second crimping devices to align the first and second crimping elements in the nip.
