A method of treating the surfaces of medical instruments which are contaminated with prions includes contacting the surface with a composition containing a source of peroxide ions, such as hydrogen peroxide, at a molar concentration of at least 1.5M peroxide (equivalent to approximately 5% hydrogen peroxide) and preferably, about 2M peroxide (approximately 7% hydrogen peroxide). The composition is optionally in the form of a gel. The composition is retained in contact with the surfaces for about 1-2 hours until all or substantially all prion contamination is removed.

Having thus described the preferred embodiment, the invention is now claimed to be: 1. A method of treatment of a prion-contaminated surface of a medical device which has been used in a surgical procedure, comprising: contacting the surface which is contaminated with prions with an aqueous gel composition for sufficient time to at least substantially reduce the prions on the surface, the composition comprising: at least 5% by weight of hydrogen peroxide; 5-30% by weight of a humectant; at least 0.1% by weight of a corrosion inhibitor; and a hydrogen peroxide stabilizer. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the hydrogen peroxide concentration is from 6-8% by weight of the composition. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the hydrogen peroxide concentration is from about 7% by weight of the composition. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the contacting includes contacting the surface with the composition for at least about 1 hour. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the contacting includes contacting the surface with the composition for about two hours. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition has a viscosity of at least 500 cps. 7. The method of claim 4, wherein the composition has a viscosity of 700 to 4000 cps. 8. The method of claim 6, wherein the composition comprises a thickener selected from the group consisting of cellulose derivatives, acrylic acid-based polymers, gums, such as guars, guar derivatives, alginates, alginate derivatives, non-ionic surfactants, non-ionic polymers, and combination thereof. 9. The method of claim 8, wherein the thickener includes a hydroxyethylcellulose or hydrophobically modified derivative thereof. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition has a pH of from about 4-8. 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the composition has a pH of from 5-6. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the humectant is selected from the group consisting of sorbitol, glycerine, glucitol, polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol, hexylene glycol, and mixtures thereof. 13. A method of treatment of a prion-contaminated surface, comprising: contacting the surface which is contaminated with prions with an aqueous gel composition for at least one hour to at least substantially reduce the prions on the surface the composition comprising: at least 5% by weight of hydrogen peroxide; and a humectant for retaining moisture on the surface the humectant including sorbitol. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the humectant is present at from about 5% to about 30% by weight of the composition. 15. The method of claim 13, wherein the composition further includes at least one of the group consisting of corrosion inhibitors, hydrogen peroxide stablilizers, and surfactants. 16. The method of claim 13, wherein the surface is the surface of a medical device. 17. A method for treatment of a device contaminated with prions, comprising: coating surfaces of the prion-contaminated device with a gel composition which includes peroxide at a molar concentration of at least 1.5 M and at least 5% of a humectant; and retaining the gel in contact with the surfaces for at least one hour to substantially reduce prions on the device.
