A retractable cover for architectural openings having collapsible vanes includes a support structure in the form of a sheet of material, monofilaments, tapes, ribbons, cords, or the like, supporting an upper edge of a plurality of vertically spaced, horizontally extending vanes with the lower edges
A retractable cover for architectural openings having collapsible vanes includes a support structure in the form of a sheet of material, monofilaments, tapes, ribbons, cords, or the like, supporting an upper edge of a plurality of vertically spaced, horizontally extending vanes with the lower edges of the vanes in most embodiments of the invention being connected to operating elements adapted to raise the lower edges of each vane toward the upper edges to define openings or gaps between the vanes through which vision and light can pass in an open condition of the covering. Variations of the covering do not require movement of a lower edge of a vane relative to an upper edge but simply movement of some vanes relative to other vanes. The vanes can be made of materials having different flexibilities and where more rigid materials are used, creased fold lines can be established for desired operability.

What is claimed is: 1. A covering for an architectural opening comprising in combination: a headrail having a roller rotatably mounted therein, a flexible panel including a support structure with upper and lower edges having its upper edge secured to said roller and at least one horizontally extending vane having upper and lower edges, one of said upper and lower edges of said vane being secured to said support structure and the other being free to move vertically, at least one flexible operative element secured to said roller at one location and to said other edge of said at least one vane at another location so that said other edge can be raised and lowered by said operative element, a dummy vane having upper and lower edges with the upper edge secured to said support structure, and a bottom rail secured to said lower edge of said support structure and to said lower edge of said dummy vane, wherein rotation of said roller effects vertical movement of said support structure and said at least one operative element. 2. The covering of claim 1 further including a catch plate on said headrail and a catch on said support structure, said catch being positioned to engage said catch plate as said roller is rotated in a first direction and said support structure is unrolled from said roller to prevent vertical movement of said support structure regardless of further unrolling of said support structure from said roller. 3. The covering of claim 2 wherein said operative elements are secured to said roller so as to be moved vertically as said roller is rotated in said first direction while said catch is engaged with said catch plate so as to move said other edge of said at least one vane vertically relative to said support structure. 4. A covering for an architectural opening comprising in combination: a headrail having a roller mounted thereon for rotation in a first and an opposite second direction, a flexible panel including a support structure with an upper and lower edge with said upper edge being secured to said roller at a first circumferential location on said roller, and a plurality of horizontally extending vanes having upper and lower edges, said upper edges of said vanes being secured to said support structure and said lower edges of said vanes being vertically movable relative to said support structure, a plurality of elongated vertically extending flexible operative elements having an upper end secured to said roller at a second location circumferentially spaced from said first location and being secured at spaced locations along their length to said bottom edges of said vanes, a dummy vane having upper and lower edges with the upper edge of said dummy vane being secured to said support structure, and a bottom rail secured to said lower edge of said dummy vane and to said support structure, wherein rotation of said roller in said first direction causes said support structure and vanes to become unrolled from said roller allowing the support structure to extend vertically and rotation of said roller in said second direction causes said support structure and vanes to be rolled onto said roller. 5. The covering of claim 4 further including a catch plate on one of said headrail and support structure, and a catch on the other of said support structure and headrail, said catch being positioned to engage said catch plate to prohibit further extension of said support structure from said roller when said roller is rotating in said first direction. 6. The covering of claim 5 wherein said operative element can be raised as said roller is rotated in said first direction while said catch and catch plate are engaged whereby said lower edges of said vanes are raised vertically relative to said support structure. 7. The covering of claim 6 wherein the catch or catch plate secured to said support structure is located near said upper edge of said support structure so as to engage the other of said catch plate or catch on said headrail when said support structure extends substantially across the entire architectural opening. 8. The covering of claim 7 wherein said support structure is a sheet of fabric material. 9. The covering of claim 8 wherein said sheet is sheer. 10. The covering of claim 7 wherein said operative elements are microfibers. 11. A covering for an architectural opening movable between extended and retracted positions comprising in combination: a headrail including a channel formed along an upper edge thereof, a roller rotatably mounted in said headrail, a flexible panel supported from said roller and adapted to be wrapped around said roller in the retracted position of the covering, a bottom rail secured to said panel along a lower portion thereof, and an adjustable stop bracket for engagement with said bottom rail when the covering is fully retracted, said bracket including a base inserted into and secured in said channel and a stop element depending from and secured to said base, said stop element being selectively positionable relative to said base so as to be vertically alignable with said bottom rail when said covering is fully retracted regardless of the length of said panel wrapped around said roller. 12. The covering of claim 11 wherein said stop element includes ratchet teeth and said base includes an arm with the arm being selectively engageable with the ratchet teeth for adjustment of the position of the stop element relative to the base. 13. The covering of claim 12 wherein said bottom rail includes an upwardly convex surface and said stop element includes a downwardly concave surface and wherein said convex and concave surfaces are in engagement when the covering is fully retracted. 14. The covering of claim 12 wherein said base includes means for releasably connecting said base in said channel of said headrail. 15. A covering for an architectural opening movable between extended and retracted positions comprising in combination: a headrail, a roller rotatably mounted in said headrail, a flexible panel supported on said roller and being adapted to be wrapped around or unwrapped from said roller to raise and lower the panel, said panel including a flexible sheet and a plurality of flexible strips having upper and lower edges, the upper edge of each strip being secured to said sheet and the lower edge being capable of being moved toward or away from said upper edge, a plurality of flexible operative elements supported on said roller and being connected to said lower edge of each of said strips and being adapted to selectively raise and lower said lower edge of each strip, and a limiter system on said headrail and said panel adapted to restrict movement of said panel as said roller is rotated to allow said operative elements to raise and lower said lower edge of said strips in response to rotation of said roller. 16. The covering of claim 15 wherein said limiter system includes a catch and a catch bar adapted to be releasably engaged. 17. The covering of claim 15 wherein said limiter system includes a magnet and a metallic element. 18. The covering of claim 15 wherein said limiter system includes releasable hook-and-loop materials. 19. The covering of claim 15 wherein said limiter system comprises a confined arcuate track in the circumference of said roller and a support rod confined in said track, said support rod being attached to an upper edge of said panel. 20. The covering of claim 19 wherein said arcuate track is defined by a plurality of arcuate bands extending along the circumference of said roller and an arcuate recess in the surface of said roller, said bands overlying said recess.
