A water decontamination medium comprising: sorbent material that binds anionic species in water, selected from the group consisting of species including chromium and species including arsenic, predominantly through a formation of surface complexes, wherein said sorbent material comprises a composition of formula (AB2X4)n wherein: A is a divalent cation selected from the group consisting of Co2+, Cu2+, Mg2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+ ; B is a trivalent cation selected from the group consisting of Al3+, Bi3+, Co3+, Cr3+, Fe3+, Mn3+, Ni3+, and V3+; X is an anion species selected from the group consisting of oxygen and sulfur; and n is at least one. 2. The decontamination medium of claim 1 wherein the sorbent material comprises a chemical substance selected from the group consisting of MgAl2O4, ZnAl2O4, MgFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, NiFe2O 4, CuFe2O4, MgCr2O4, (Ni,)(Cr,V) 2O4, (Co,Ni)(Cr,Al)2O4, MgV2 O4, Mg2TiO4, CuCo2O4, CuBi2O4, and ZnMn2O4. 3. The decontamination medium of claim 1 wherein the sorbent material is at least one selected from MgFe2O4, MgCr 2O4, MgV2O4, Mg2TiO4, CuCo2O4, CuFe2O4, NiAl2O 4, ZnMn2O4, or CoAl2O4. 4. A water decontamination medium comprising: a sorbent material that binds anionic species, selected from the group consisting of species including chromium and species including arsenic, predominantly through a formation of surface complexes, wherein said sorbent material comprises a composition of formula (AB2 X4)n, wherein: A is an element selected from the group consisting of Co2+ , Cu2+, Fe2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Ni 2+, and Zn2+; B is an element selected from the group consisting of Al3+ , Bi3+, Co3+, Cr3+, Fe3+, Mn 3+, Ni3+, and V3+; X is selected from oxygen and sulfur; n is at least one; and wherein B is a different element than A. 5. The water decontamination medium of claim 4 wherein said sorbent material comprises a chemical substance selected from the group consisting of MgAl2O4, MnAl2O4, FeAl2O4, ZnAl2O4, MgFe2O 4, MnFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, NiFe 2O4, CuFe2O4, MgCr2O4, (Mn,Fe)(Cr,V)2O4, FeCr2O4, (Ni,Fe)(Cr, V)2O4, (Co,Ni)(Cr,Al)2O4, MgV 2O4, FeV2O4, (Mn,Fe)(V,Cr)2O 4, Mg2TiO4, Fe2TiO4, CuCo 2O4, CuBi2O4, and ZnMn2O 4. 6. A water decontamination medium comprising: a sorbent material that binds anionic species, selected from the group consisting of species including chromium and species including arsenic, predominantly through a formation of surface complexes, wherein said sorbent is selected from the group consisting of MgFe2O 4, MnFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, NiFe 2O4, CuFe2O4, MgCr2O4, MnCr2O4 FeCr2O4, NiCr2O 4, CoCr2O4, MgV2O4, MnV2 O4, FeV2O4, NiV2O4, Mg 2TiO4, Fe2TiO4, CuCo2O4, CuBi2O4, MnAl2O4 and ZnMn2 O4.
