An optical fiber ribbon includes a plurality of optical fibers encapsulated within a matrix material, where the optical fiber coating(s) and the matrix material(s), and optionally any ink layers thereon, are characterized by compatible chemical and/or physical properties, whereby the fiber coating and matrix and any ink layers therebetween can be reliably stripped from the optical fibers to afford a suitable strip cleanliness. Novel ink formulations that can be used in the making of such fiber optic ribbons, methods of making such ribbons, and their use are also described.

What is claimed is: 1. An optical fiber ribbon comprising: a plurality of optical fibers that each comprise a coating; an ink layer that at least partially encapsulates one or more of the optical fibers; and a matrix substantially encapsulating the plurality of optical fibers and the ink layer; wherein the coating, the ink layer, and the matrix are each characterized by a glass transition temperature (Tg) and a fracture toughness (K1C) value, and either (i) the difference between the highest and lowest of the respective Tg values is less than about 15째 C., (ii) the respective Tg values are at least about 60째 C., (iii) the respective K1C values are at least about 0.8 MPa쨌m1/2, or (iv) any two or more of (i), (ii), and (iii) are satisfied. 2. The optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1, wherein the difference between the highest and lower of the respective glass transition temperatures is less than about 15째 C. 3. The optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1, wherein the respective Tg values are at least about 60째 C. 4. The optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1, wherein the respective K1C values are at least about 0.8 MPa쨌m1/2. 5. The optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1, wherein the difference between the highest and lowest of the respective Tg values is less than about 15째 C., the respective Tg values are at least about 60째 C., and the respective K1C values are at least about 0.8 MPa쨌m1/2. 6. The optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1, wherein the coating is a secondary coating, each of plurality of optical fibers further comprising a primary coating. 7. The optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1, wherein the matrix is an inner matrix, the ribbon further comprising an outer matrix that encapsulates the inner matrix. 8. The optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1, wherein the coating, the ink layer, and the matrix are each characterized by a ductility parameter value of at least about 350 microns. 9. The optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1, wherein the coating, the ink layer, and the matrix are each characterized by a tensile modulus value, and difference between the highest and lowest of the respective tensile modulus values is less than about 500 MPa. 10. The optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1, wherein the coating, the ink layer, and the matrix are, independently, the cured product of a composition that contains one or more urethane oligomers each comprising one or more functional groups independently selected from the group consisting of acrylate, methacrylate, acrylamide, N-vinyl amide, styrene, vinyl ether, and vinyl ester; and one or more monomers selected from the group of acrylates, methacrylates, acrylamides, N-vinyl amides, styrenes, vinyl ethers, vinyl esters, acid esters, and combinations thereof. 11. A telecommunication system comprising one or more optical fiber ribbons according to claim 1. 12. A method of making an optical fiber ribbon, said method comprising: providing a plurality of optical fibers, each having a coating; applying an ink composition at least partially to one or more of the plurality of optical fibers; encapsulating the optical fiber in a matrix composition; and curing the ink composition and the matrix composition to form an optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1.
