Methods, apparatus, and business techniques are disclosed for use in mobile network communication systems. A mobile unit such as a smart phone is preferably equipped with a wireless local area network connection and a wireless wide area network connection. The local area network connection is used to establish a position-dependent ecommerce network connection with a wireless peripheral supplied by a vendor. The mobile unit is then temporarily augmented with the added peripheral services supplied by the negotiated wireless peripheral. Systems and methods allow the mobile unit to communicate securely with a remote server, even when the negotiated wireless peripheral is not fully trusted. Also mobile units, wireless user peripherals, and negotiated wireless peripherals that project a non-area constrained user interface image on a display surface are taught.

A method for use with a wireless handheld device, the method comprising: downloading video content from a remote server via a wireless access connection to the wireless handheld device; wirelessly communicating using a wireless local area network protocol with a peripheral augmentation device that is external to the wireless handheld device and that includes a non-area constrained display, the wirelessly communicating including the wireless handheld device engaging in a handshaking sequence with the peripheral augmentation device to gain access to the non-area constrained display; and wirelessly coupling the video content from the wireless handheld device to the peripheral augmentation device for display on the non-area constrained display. 2. The method according to claim 1, further comprising: modifying a device registry configuration to account for the utilization of the peripheral augmentation device. 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the peripheral augmentation device is a negotiated wireless peripheral device (NWP). 4. The method according to claim 3, wherein the handshaking sequence is part of a position dependent ecommerce session. 5. The method according to claim 4, wherein the handshaking sequence comprises a member of the group consisting of passing a digital debit instrument, passing credit card information, and passing user account authentication information. 6. The method according to claim 1, wherein the handshaking sequence includes the wireless handheld device submitting credential data to the peripheral augmentation device, and the peripheral augmentation device granting access to the non-area constrained display responsive to successfully verifying the credential data. 7. The method according to claim 1, wherein the peripheral augmentation device is a personal property of a user of the wireless handheld device. 8. The method according to claim 1, wherein the wireless handheld device comprises a wireless handheld phone. 9. The method according to claim 8, wherein the wireless handheld phone comprises a wireless handheld smart phone. 10. The method according to claim 1, further comprising: wirelessly coupling an interactive user interface from the wireless handheld device to the peripheral augmentation device to be displayed on the non-area constrained display, wherein the interactive user interface includes selectable elements that a user of the wireless handheld device can select via interactions with the interactive user interface displayed on the non-area constrained display. 11. The method according to claim 1, wherein the video content comprises video-on-demand digital video content and the remote server comprises a video content vending server. 12. The method according to claim 1, wherein the wireless handheld device includes a built-in area-constrained display, the method further comprising: coupling the video content to the built-in area-constrained display, to thereby concurrently display the video content on both the area-constrained display and the non-area constrained display. 13. The method according to claim 1, wherein the wirelessly coupling of the video content is performed in accordance with a Bluetooth protocol. 14. The method according to claim 1, wherein the wirelessly coupling of the video content is performed in accordance with an IEEE 802.11 protocol. 15. The method according to claim 1, wherein the wirelessly coupling of the video content is performed in accordance with a member of the group consisting of a HiperLAN protocol, a HomeRF protocol, and a DECT protocol. 16. A method for use with a wireless handheld device having digital video content stored on a storage medium associated with the wireless handheld device, the method comprising: the wireless handheld device wirelessly communicating via a wireless local area network connection with an external video viewing device that provides a non-area constrained display that is external to the wireless handheld device; the wireless handheld device engaging in a handshaking sequence with the external video viewing device and passing verification information to the external video viewing device during the handshaking sequence; the external video viewing device examining the verification information, and if the examining results in an affirmative verification, allowing the wireless handheld device to use the non-area constrained display; and wirelessly coupling the digital video content from the wireless handheld device to the external video viewing device via the wireless local area network connection, to thereby cause a motion video image related to the digital video content to be displayed on the non-area constrained display. 17. The method according to claim 16, further comprising: modifying a device registry configuration to account for an availability of the external video viewing device. 18. The method according to claim 16, wherein the external video viewing device is a negotiated wireless peripheral device (NWP) and the handshaking sequence is part of a position dependent ecommerce session. 19. The method according to claim 18, wherein the verification information passed during the handshaking sequence comprises verification information for a member of the group consisting of a digital debit instrument, a credit card account, and an authorized subscriber account. 20. The method according to claim 16, wherein the external video viewing device comprises a personal property of a user of the wireless handheld device. 21. The method according to claim 16, wherein the wireless handheld device comprises a member of the group consisting of a wireless handheld phone and a wireless handheld smart phone capable of executing a plurality of application programs. 22. The method according to claim 16, wherein the digital video content comprises video-on-demand digital video content, the method further comprising: prior to the storing, downloading the video-on-demand digital video content via an Internet from a remote video content vending server to the wireless handheld device. 23. The method according to claim 16, wherein the wireless handheld device includes a built-in area constrained display, the method further comprising: coupling the digital video content to the area constrained display, whereby the motion video image is concurrently displayed on both the area-constrained display and the non-area constrained display. 24. The method according to claim 16, further comprising: wirelessly coupling an interactive user interface from the wireless handheld device to the external video viewing device to be displayed on the non-area constrained display, wherein the interactive user interface includes selectable elements that a user of the wireless handheld device can select via interactions with the interactive user interface displayed on the non-area constrained display. 25. The method according to claim 16, wherein the wirelessly coupling of the digital video content is performed in accordance with a member of the group consisting of a Bluetooth protocol and an IEEE 802.11 protocol. 26. The method according to claim 16, wherein the wirelessly coupling of the digital video content is performed in accordance with a member of the group consisting of a HiperLAN protocol, a HomeRF protocol, and a DECT protocol. 27. A method for use with a wireless handheld device having a built-in area-constrained display, the method comprising: storing displayable content in a storage medium associated with the wireless handheld device; wirelessly coupling the displayable content, via a wireless local area network connection, to an external display device that includes a non-area constrained display that is external to the wireless handheld device; and selectively causing the displayable content to be displayed on the built-in area constrained display and/or the external non-area-constrained display, whereby a user of the wireless handheld device is afforded the capability of viewing the content on either or both of the area-constrained display and the non-area constrained display. 28. The method according to claim 27, wherein the wireless handbeld device comprises a member of the group consisting of a wireless handheld phone and a wireless handheld smart phone. 29. The method according to claim 27, wherein the displayable content comprises digital video content. 30. The method according to claim 29, wherein the digital video content comprises video-on-demand digital video content, the method further comprising: prior to the storing, downloading the video-on-demand digital video content via an Internet from a remote video content vending server to the wireless handheld device. 31. The method according to claim 29, wherein the digital video content comprises video from a live video conference. 32. The method according to claim 27, wherein the wirelessly coupling is performed in accordance with a member of the group consisting of a Bluetooth protocol and an IEEE 802.11 protocol. 33. The method according to claim 27, wherein the wirelessly coupling is performed in accordance with a member of the group consisting of a HiperLAN protocol, a HomeRF protocol, and a DECT protocol. 34. The method according to claim 27, wherein the non-area constrained display displays a user interface that includes user selectable portions, the method further comprising: accepting a first user input into the wireless handheld device to position a pointer symbol proximate to a particular one of the user selectable portions; accepting a second user input into the wireless handheld device to select the particular one of the user selectable portions; and the wireless handheld device executing a computerized action in response to the selection of the particular one of the user selectable portions. 35. A method for use with a wireless handheld telephony device having digital video content stored on a storage medium therein, the method comprising: the wireless handheld telephony device wirelessly communicating via a wireless wide network area interface to place a voice telephone call via a cellular communications network; the wireless handheld telephony device wirelessly communicating via a wireless local area network connection with an external video viewing device that provides a non-area constrained display that is external to the wireless handheld telephony device; the wireless handheld telephony device engaging in a handshaking sequence with the external video viewing device and passing verification information to the video viewing device during the handshaking sequence; the external video viewing device examining the verification information, and if the examining results in an affirmative verification, allowing the wireless handheld telephony device to use the non-area constrained display; and wirelessly coupling from the wireless handheld telephony device to the external video viewing device, via the wireless local area network connection, digital video data related to the digital video content, to thereby cause a motion video image related to the digital video content to be displayed on the non-area constrained display. 36. The method according to claim 35, wherein the external video viewing device is a negotiated wireless peripheral device (NWP), and the verification information is related to a member of the group consisting of a digital debit instrument, a credit card account, and a subscriber account. 37. The method according to claim 35, wherein the wirelessly coupling of the digital video data is performed in accordance with a member of the group consisting of a Bluetooth protocol and an IEEE 802.11 protocol. 38. The method according to claim 37, further comprising: wirelessly coupling an interactive user interface from the wireless handheld telephony device to the external video viewing device to be displayed on the non-area constrained display, wherein the interactive user interface includes selectable elements that a user of the wireless handheld device can select via interactions with the interactive user interface displayed on the non-area constrained display. 39. The method according to claim 35, further comprising: modifying a device registry configuration to account for the utilization of the external video viewing device. 40. The method according to claim 35, wherein the external video viewing device is a personal property of a user of the wireless handheld device. 41. A method for use with a wireless handheld telephony device, the method comprising: the wireless handheld telephony device wirelessly communicating via a wireless wide area network interface to place a voice telephone call via a cellular communications network; wirelessly downloading digital video content from a remote network server to the wireless handheld telephony device; the wireless handheld telephony device wirelessly communicating via a wireless local area network connection with an external video viewing device that provides a non-area constrained display that is external to the wireless handheld telephony device; and wirelessly coupling from the wireless handheld telephony device to the external video viewing device, via the wireless local area network connection, video data related to the digital video content, to thereby cause a motion video image related to the digital video content to be displayed on the non-area constrained display. 42. The method according to claim 41, further comprising: the wireless handheld telephony device engaging in a handshaking sequence and passing information to the video viewing device; and the video viewing device verifying the information passed during the handshaking sequence and granting the wireless handheld telephony device access to the non-area constrained display in response to the verifying being successful. 43. The method according to claim 42, wherein the external video viewing device is a negotiated wireless peripheral device (NWP), the handshaking sequence is a part of a position-dependent ecommerce session, and the verification information is related to a member of the group consisting of a digital debit instrument, a credit card account, and a subscriber account. 44. The method according to claim 41, wherein the wirelessly coupling of the digital video data is performed in accordance with a member of the group consisting of a Bluetooth protocol and an IEEE 802.11 protocol. 45. The method according to claim 41, further comprising: modifying a device registry configuration to account for the utilization of the external video viewing device.
