The present invention is directed to methods and compositions for improving pulmonary surfactant catabolism. More specifically, the specification describes methods and compositions for making and using a lysosomal phospholipase A2 in methods for the diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of phospholi

What is claimed is: 1. A method of increasing degradation of glycerophospholipids in macrophage foam cells comprising contacting a sample containing macrophage foam cells with a composition comprising a lysosomal phospholipase A2 (LPLA2) protein having an amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO:2, or an enzymatically active fragment thereof. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said macrophage is located at the site of a lesion in an arterial wall. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein said arterial wall is located in vitro. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein said macrophage is in an arterial wall located in vivo. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein said contacting comprises administering a composition comprising said lysosomal phospholipase A2 protein in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
