The invention relates to a microcapsule comprising an inorganic antimicrobial agent coated with a hydrophilic polymer. The hydrophilic polymer is able to absorb sufficient water as to enable the action of the encapsulated antimicrobial agent. These microcapsules are useful to impart antimicrobial activity and can be used in polymer compositions, sprays and coatings. A method of preparing the microcapsule by treatment of the antimicrobial agent with a solution of the hydrophilic polymer is provided. Another embodiment of the invention is a method of preparing the microcapsule by coating of the antimicrobial agent with a polymer precursor followed by treatment with a reactive ingredient. Another embodiment of the invention is a method of preparing the microcapsule by melt compounding the antimicrobial agent with the hydrophilic polymer followed by grinding to the desired particle size. Polymer compositions comprising the microcapsules and a matrix polymer are also provided. Another embodiment of the invention is an article prepared from the polymer compositions comprising the microcapsules and a matrix polymer.

What is claimed is: 1. What is claimed is: 1. A polymer composition comprising a) an antimicrobial additive comprising 10 to 1000 parts by weight of at least one ion-exchange type antimicrobial agent comprising a ceramic carrier and ion-exchanged antimicrobial metal ions and 100 parts by weight of a water absorbing, water vapor absorbing and wettable hydrophilic polymer having a water absorption at equilibrium of at least 5% by weight, the extent of water absorption being sufficient to allow for ion transport within and through, the hydrophilic polymer so as to facilitate the ion-exchange and subsequent release of an antimicrobially effective amount of the antimicrobial metal ions, said antimicrobial additive in the form of microparticles of the hydrophilic polymer having dispersed therein multiple particles of the at least one ion-exchange type antimicrobial agent, said microparticles having an average diameter of from about 15μ to about 300μ; and b) a matrix polymer wherein the hydrophilic microparticles are dispersed as a discrete phase within the matrix polymer. 2. The polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the antimicrobial agent is a zeolite that contains silver ions alone or in combination with zinc ions or copper ions or both. 3. The polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is a polymer with water absorption at equilibrium of at least about 20% by weight. 4. The polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyhydroxyethyl methacrylate, polyacrylamide, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone, polysaccharides, polylactic acid, polyamide and polyurethane. 5. The polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is polyurethane. 6. The polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the microparticles contain from 10 to 200 parts by weight of antimicrobial agent based upon 100 parts by weight of hydrophilic polymer. 7. The polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the microparticles contain from 20 to 100 parts by weight of antimicrobial agent based upon 100 parts by weight of hydrophilic polymer. 8. The polymer composition according to claim 1 further comprises an inorganic discoloration inhibiting agent. 9. The polymer composition according to claim 8 wherein said discoloration inhibiting agent is an ammonium compound. 10. The polymer composition according to claim 8 wherein the inorganic discoloration inhibiting agent comprises ion-exchanged ammonium ions contained within said antimicrobial agent. 11. The polymer composition according to claim 1 further comprising a dopant agent. 12. The polymer composition according to claim 11, wherein said dopant is an inorganic sodium salt. 13. The polymer composition according to claim 12, wherein said dopant is sodium nitrate. 14. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the matrix polymer is an addition polymer selected from the group consisting of polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinylchloride, ABS, SAN, epoxy resins and polytetrafluoroethylene. 15. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the matrix polymer is a condensation polymer selected from the group consisting of polyurethanes, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyamides, polyimides and silicone polymers. 16. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the matrix polymer is not a hydrophilic polymer. 17. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the matrix polymer is a hydrophilic polymer whose hydrophilic property is different from that of the hydrophilic polymer used to make the antimicrobial hydrophilic polymer microparticle. 18. The polymer composition of claim 1 wherein the matrix polymer is a polymer blend. 19. The polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the mean average diameter is from about 15μ to about 200μ. 20. The polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the mean average diameter is from about 50μ to about 200μ. 21. The polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the antimicrobial agent comprises a ceramic carrier selected from the group consisting of zeolites, hydroxyapatites and zirconium phosphates having ion-exchanged antimicrobial metal ions. 22. The polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the antimicrobial metal ion is selected from the group consisting of silver, copper, zinc, tin, gold, mercury, lead, iron, cobalt, nickel, manganese, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, barium, cadmium, chromium, thallium and combinations thereof. 23. The polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the antimicrobial metal ion is silver, zinc, copper or a combination of any two or all three of the foregoing. 24. A polymer composition comprising a) an antimicrobial additive comprising a discrete particle of an ion-exchange type antimicrobial agent comprising a ceramic carrier and ion-exchanged antimicrobial metal ions encapsulated in a water absorbing, water vapor absorbing and wettable hydrophilic polymer having a water absorption at equilibrium of at least 5% by weight and sufficient to allow for ion transport within and through the hydrophilic polymer so as to facilitate the ion-exchange and subsequent release of an antimicrobially effective amount of the antimicrobial metal ions, the thickness of the hydrophilic polymer coating being from about 1μ to about 15μ, said antimicrobial additive having a mean average particle size of about 300μ or less and a weight ratio of the antimicrobial agent to the hydrophilic polymer of from 1:100 to 1000:100 and b) a matrix polymer wherein the antimicrobial additive particles are dispersed as a discrete phase within the matrix polymer. 25. The polymer composition according to claim 24 wherein the antimicrobial agent is coated with the hydrophilic polymer and the coating has a thickness of 1μ to 10μ. 26. The polymer composition according to claim 24 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is polyurethane. 27. The polymer composition according to claim 24 wherein the ceramic carrier is selected from the group consisting of zeolites, hydroxyapatites, and zirconium phosphates. 28. The polymer composition according to claim 24 wherein the antimicrobial metal ion is selected from the group consisting of silver, copper, zinc, tin, gold, mercury, lead, iron, cobalt, nickel, manganese, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, barium cadmium, chromium, thallium and combinations thereof. 29. The polymer composition according to claim 24 wherein the antimicrobial metal ion is silver, zinc, copper or a combination of any two or all three of the foregoing. 30. The polymer composition according to claim 24 wherein the antimicrobial agent is a zeolite that contains silver ions alone or in combination with zinc ions or copper ions or both. 31. The polymer composition according to claim 24 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is a polymer with water absorption at equilibrium of at least about 20% by weight. 32. The polymer composition according to claim 24 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyhydroxyethyl methacrylate, polyacrylamide, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone, polysaccharides, polylactic acid, polyamide and polyurethane. 33. The polymer composition of claim 24 wherein the matrix polymer is an addition polymer selected from the group consisting of polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinylchloride, ABS, SAN, epoxy resins and polytetrafluoroethylene. 34. The polymer composition of claim 24 wherein the matrix polymer is a condensation polymer selected from the group consisting of polyurethanes, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyamides, polyimides and silicone polymers. 35. The polymer composition of claim 24 wherein the matrix polymer is a hydrophilic polymer whose hydrophilic property is different from that of the hydrophilic polymer encapsulant used to make the microcapsule. 36. The polymer composition according to claim 24 further comprises an inorganic discoloration inhibiting agent. 37. The polymer composition according to claim 36 wherein said discoloration inhibiting agent is an ammonium compound. 38. The polymer composition according to claim 36 wherein the inorganic discoloration inhibiting agent comprises ion-exchanged ammonium ions contained within said antimicrobial agent. 39. The polymer composition according to claim 24 further comprising a dopant agent. 40. The polymer composition according to claim 39 wherein said dopant is an inorganic sodium salt. 41. The polymer composition according to claim 40 wherein said dopant is sodium nitrate. 42. The polymer composition of claim 24 wherein the matrix polymer is a hydrophilic polymer whose hydrophilic property is different from that of the hydrophilic polymer used to make the antimicrobial hydrophilic polymer microparticle. 43. The polymer composition of claim 24 wherein the matrix polymer is a polymer blend.
