An apparatus and method for preventing free flow through an infusion set utilizes an occluder disposed within the infusion set to selectively prevent flow therethrough. The occluder may be responsive to a pressure differential within the infusion set or may respond to compression of the infusion set. When a pair of occluders are used in sequence, an in-line pump may be formed.

What is claimed is: 1. An occluder for preventing flow in an infusion set comprising: a body having a first end and a second end and having a cylindrical bore therethrough connecting the first end and the second end and defining round openings at the first end and second end, the first end being configured for disposition in a tube of an infusion set; a stop configured for disposition in the tube to thereby selectively allow and prevent flow through the infusion set, the stop having a first end, a second end, and a middle portion therebetween, the middle portion of the body having a diameter greater than the first end and the second end of the stop; and a plurality of arms connecting the stop to the body, the plurality of arms being attached to the first end of the body without blocking the bore through the body and without blocking the opening of the bore at the first end of the body, the arms being attached to the first end of the stop; and wherein the occluder is configured for disposition in a tube having a smooth bore of consistent diameter in the area of the tube functionally associated with the occluder. 2. The occluder of claim 1, wherein the body is generally cylindrical. 3. The occluder of claim 1, wherein the plurality of arms are spaced apart at their point of connection to the stop. 4. The occluder of claim 1, wherein the stop has a generally annular rib formed thereon. 5. The occluder of claim 1, wherein the stop has a pair of generally annular ribs formed thereon. 6. The occluder of claim 5, wherein the pair of generally annular ribs are the same diameter. 7. The occluder of claim 1, further comprising a void between the plurality of arms. 8. The occluder of claim 4, wherein the generally annular rib defines a rounded outer surface. 9. An occluder for use in an infusion set, the occluder comprising: a body having a proximal section configured for disposition in a piece of tubing of an infusion set; and a stop configured for positioning within the tubing of the infusion set to thereby selectively allow and prevent flow through the tubing, the stop having a proximal end, a distal end attached to the proximal end of the body, and a middle portion therebetween, the middle portion having a diameter greater than that of the proximal end and the distal end, the stop having at least one generally annular rib disposed thereon and extending to a diameter greater than the diameter of the middle portion, the at least one generally annular rib being configured for engaging the piece of tubing to form a seal; and wherein the occluder is configured for disposition in a tube having a smooth bore of consistent diameter in the area of the tube functionally associated with the occluder. 10. An occluder system comprising the occluder of claim 9, wherein the system further comprises a tubing and wherein the stop is disposed in the bore of the tubing to thereby occlude flow, and wherein fluid flow is accomplished by radial expansion of the tubing from fluid pressure in at least one portion of the tubing to enable flow past the stop. 11. The occluder of claim 9, wherein the generally annular rib is rounded in shape. 12. The occluder of claim 9, wherein the at least one generally annular rib is disposed adjacent the middle of the stop. 13. The occluder of claim 9, wherein the proximal end of the stop is tapered and wherein the proximal end of the stop defines a generally flat surface generally perpendicular to the axis of the occluder. 14. An occluder for preventing flow in an infusion set comprising: a body having a first end and a second end and having a cylindrical bore therethrough connecting the first end and the second end and defining round openings at the first end and second end, the first end being configured for disposition in a tube of an infusion set; a stop configured for disposition in the tube to thereby selectively allow and prevent flow through the infusion set, the stop having a first end, a second end, and a middle portion therebetween, the middle portion of the body having a diameter greater than the first end and the second end of the stop; and a plurality of arms connecting the stop to the body, the plurality of arms being attached to the first end of the body without blocking the bore through the body and without blocking the opening of the bore at the first end of the body, the arms being attached to the first end of the stop; and wherein the occluder is configured for disposition in an elastomeric tube, and wherein flow is allowed by lateral distortion of the tube to create a flow channel between the stop and the tube. 15. The occluder of claim 14, wherein the body is generally cylindrical. 16. The occluder of claim 14, wherein the plurality of arms are spaced apart at their point of connection to the stop. 17. The occluder of claim 14, wherein the stop has a generally annular rib formed thereon. 18. The occluder of claim 14, wherein the stop has a pair of generally annular ribs formed thereon. 19. The occluder of claim 18, wherein the pair of generally annular ribs are the same diameter. 20. The occluder of claim 14, further comprising a void between the plurality of arms. 21. The occluder of claim 17, wherein the generally annular rib defines a rounded outer surface. 22. An occluder for use in an infusion set, the occluder comprising: a body having a proximal section configured for disposition in a piece of tubing of an infusion set; and a stop configured for positioning within the tubing of the infusion set to thereby selectively allow and prevent flow through the tubing, the stop having a proximal end, a distal end attached to the proximal end of the body, and a middle portion therebetween, the middle portion having a diameter greater than that of the proximal end and the distal end, the stop having at least one generally annular rib disposed thereon and extending to a diameter greater than the diameter of the middle portion, the at least one generally annular rib being configured for engaging the piece of tubing to form a seal; and wherein the occluder is configured for disposition in an elastomeric tube, and wherein flow is allowed by lateral distortion of the tube to create a flow channel between the stop and the tube. 23. An occluder system comprising the occluder of claim 22, wherein the system further comprises a tubing and wherein the stop is disposed in the bore of the tubing to thereby occlude flow, and wherein fluid flow is accomplished by radial expansion of the tubing from fluid pressure in at least one portion of the tubing to enable flow past the stop. 24.
