A hydrostatic transmission mountable to a vehicle frame. The hydrostatic transmission is adapted to removeably receive an axle shaft. The hydrostatic transmission is also adapted to be mounted to at least one of two opposed side members of the vehicle frame. The opposed side members have openings through which the axel shaft passes. The vehicle may be a snow thrower.

What is claimed is: 1. A vehicle, comprising: a vehicle frame having opposed side frame members, the side frame members having opposed openings; and a drive mechanism, further comprising: a housing; at least one drive gear contained in the housing; an axle shaft inserted through the openings of the side frame members; and a single sleeve piece mated to the drive gear by at least one key, the sleeve piece releasably receiving and driving the axle shaft. 2. The vehicle as recited in claim 1, wherein insertion of the axle shaft through the openings of the side frame members and into the sleeve piece supports the drive mechanism in the frame. 3. The vehicle as recited in claim 1, wherein the axle shaft is retained within the sleeve piece by a fastener. 4. The vehicle as recited in claim 1, wherein the axle shaft interfaces with the side frame members by way of bearings inserted into the side frame members. 5. The vehicle as recited in claim 1, wherein the drive mechanism further comprises a hydraulic pump, a hydraulic motor, and a center section on which the hydraulic pump and motor are mounted, and the drive gear is powered by the hydraulic motor. 6. The vehicle as recited in claim 1, wherein the vehicle is a snow thrower. 7. The vehicle as recited in claim 1, wherein the housing is attached to the vehicle frame. 8. A vehicle, comprising: a vehicle frame having opposed side frame members, the side frame members having opposed openings; and a drive mechanism, further comprising: a housing; at least one drive gear; a single sleeve piece drivingly mated to the drive gear, the sleeve piece passing through the housing and extending from opposite ends of the housing; and an axle shaft releasably received and driven by the sleeve piece, the axle shaft passing through the opposed openings of the side frame members. 9. The vehicle as recited in claim 8, wherein insertion of the axle shaft through the openings of the side frame members and into the sleeve piece supports the drive mechanism in the frame. 10. The vehicle as recited in claim 8, wherein the axle shaft is retained within the sleeve piece by a fastener. 11. The vehicle as recited in claim 8, wherein the axle shaft interfaces with the side frame members by way of bearings inserted into the side frame members. 12. The vehicle as recited in claim 8, wherein the drive mechanism further comprises a hydraulic pump, a hydraulic motor, and a center section on which the hydraulic pump and motor are mounted, and the drive gear is powered by the hydraulic motor. 13. The vehicle as recited in claim 8, the drive mechanism further comprising a key drivingly mating the sleeve piece to the drive gear. 14. The vehicle as recited in claim 13, wherein the drive gear has a recess, the sleeve piece has a flat surface and the key is positioned between the recess and the flat surface. 15. The vehicle as recited in claim 14, wherein the drive gear is comprised of an interface piece and wherein the recess is formed in the interface piece. 16. A drive mechanism and vehicle frame module comprising: a vehicle frame having opposed side frame members, the side frame members having opposed openings; and a drive mechanism, further comprising: a housing mounted to the vehicle frame; at least one drive gear; a single sleeve piece drivingly mated to the drive gear, the sleeve piece passing through the housing and extending from opposite ends of the housing; and an axle shaft releasably received and driven by the sleeve piece, the axle shaft passing through the opposed openings of the side frame members. 17. The drive mechanism and vehicle frame module as recited in claim 16, wherein insertion of the axle shaft through the openings of the side frame members and into the sleeve piece supports the drive mechanism in the frame. 18. The drive mechanism and vehicle frame module as recited in claim 16, wherein the axle shaft is retained within the sleeve piece by a fastener. 19. The drive mechanism and vehicle frame module as recited in claim 16, wherein the axle shaft interfaces with the side frame members by way of bearings inserted into the side frame members. 20. The drive mechanism and vehicle frame module as recited in claim 16, wherein the drive mechanism further comprises a hydraulic pump, a hydraulic motor, and a center section on which the hydraulic pump and motor are mounted, and the drive gear is powered by the hydraulic motor. 21. The drive mechanism and vehicle frame module as recited in claim 16, the drive mechanism further comprising a key drivingly mating the sleeve piece to the drive gear. 22. The drive mechanism and vehicle frame module as recited in claim 21, wherein the drive gear has a recess and the sleeve piece has a flat surface and the key is positioned between the recess and the flat surface. 23. The drive mechanism and vehicle frame module as recited in claim 22, wherein the drive gear is comprised of an interface piece and wherein the recess is formed in the interface piece.
