A device one version of which comprises a planar member having a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the top surface defines an array of recesses configured for substantial alignment with an array of blister-like chambers in a sheet to receive a plurality of objects. All of the recesses defined by the planar member are substantially uniform in size and each recess is sized and configured so that substantially all of at least one of the objects may fit in a respective recess. The planar member also defines a plurality of fluid passageways, each passageway opening respectively into one of the recesses defined by the top surface of the planar member, at least a portion of each fluid passageway being more narrow in cross-section than its respective recess to retain the object in its respective recess. Related vacuum apparatus employing the device is described.

That which is claimed is: 1. A device comprising a planar member having a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the top surface defines an array of recesses configured for substantial alignment with an array of blister-like chambers formed by a sheet for receiving a plurality of objects, wherein all of the recesses defined by the planar member are substantially uniform in size and each recess is sized and configured so that substantially all of at least one of the plurality of objects may fit therein, and wherein the planar member defines a plurality of fluid passageways, each passageway opening respectively into one of the recesses defined by the top surface of the planar member, at least a portion of each fluid passageway being more narrow in cross-section than its respective recess. 2. A device according to claim 1 wherein the device further comprises one or more rails attached to or integral with the planar member, at least one of the rails being disposed between two respective rows of the recesses. 3. A device according to claim 2, wherein the rails are separate from, but configured for attachment to, the planar member. 4. A device according to any of claims 1, 2 or 3, wherein each of the objects has substantially the same three dimensional shape with an average width, an average thickness and an average length, and wherein each of the recesses in the planar member is sized and configured so that it is substantially filled when it receives respectively one of the objects. 5. A device according to claim 4 wherein the planar member also defines a plurality of linear grooves, the grooves being disposed in substantially parallel fashion relative to one another, each of the grooves having therein a plurality of the recesses spaced apart from one another along the length of the groove to form an array of recesses, so that every recess in the array of recesses is disposed within a respective groove, thereby forming a row of recesses in each of the grooves. 6. A device according to claim 1 or 4, wherein each recess has a floor. 7. A device according to claim 6, wherein each of the objects has substantially the same three dimensional shape with an average width, an average thickness and an average length, and wherein each of the recesses in the planar member is sized and configured so that it is substantially filled when it receives respectively one of the objects. 8. A device comprising (a) a device according to claim 1, wherein each passageway opening is sized and configured so that the object is retained within the recess when a vacuum is produced within the passageway, (b) a vacuum pump configured to be placed in fluid communication with the one or more fluid passageways extending through the planar member, and (c) an on-off switch operatively connected to the vacuum pump for controlling the level of vacuum provided within the one or more fluid passageways and the recesses defined by the planar member. 9. A device according to claim 8, wherein the planar member also defines a plurality of linear grooves, the grooves being disposed in substantially parallel fashion relative to one another, each of the grooves having therein a plurality of the recesses spaced apart from one another along the length of the groove to form an array of recesses, so that every recess in the array of recesses is disposed within a respective groove, thereby forming a row of recesses in each of the grooves. 10. A device according to claim 8, wherein each of the objects has substantially the same three dimensional shape with an average width, an average thickness and an average length, and wherein each of the recesses in the planar member is sized and configured so that it is substantially filled when it receives respectively one of the objects. 11. A device according to claim 1, wherein the planar member also defines a plurality of linear grooves, the grooves being disposed in substantially parallel fashion relative to one another, each of the grooves having therein a plurality of the recesses spaced apart from one another along the length of the groove to form an array of recesses, so that every recess in the array of recesses is disposed within a respective groove, thereby forming a row of recesses in each of the grooves. 12. A device according to claim 11 wherein each of the objects has substantially the same three dimensional shape with an average width, an average thickness and an average length, and wherein each of the recesses in the planar member is sized and configured so that it is substantially filled when it receives respectively one of the objects. 13. A device according to 12 wherein each recess has a floor. 14. A device according to claim 1 wherein each passageway opening is sized and configured so that the object is retained within the recess when a vacuum is produced within the passageway, and wherein the plurality of objects is a plurality of pills, tablets, capsules, or caplets. 15. A device according to claim 14 wherein the device has at least one of the following features: each recess has a floor; or the planar member also defines a plurality of linear grooves, the grooves being disposed in substantially parallel fashion relative to one another, each of the grooves having therein a plurality of the recesses spaced apart from one another along the length of the groove to form an array of recesses, so that every recess in the array of recesses is disposed within a respective groove, thereby forming a row of recesses in each of the grooves. 16. A device according to claim 1 wherein the plurality of objects is a plurality of pills, tablets, capsules, or caplets, and wherein the plurality of pills, tablets, capsules, or caplets is retained in the plurality of recesses. 17. A device according to claim 1 wherein the planar member also defines a plurality of linear grooves, the grooves being disposed in substantially parallel fashion relative to one another, each of the grooves having therein a plurality of the recesses spaced apart from one another along the length of the groove to form an array of recesses, so that every recess in the array of recesses is disposed within a respective groove, thereby forming a row of recesses in each of the grooves. 18. A device according to claim 17 wherein each recess has a floor. 19. A device according to claim 17 wherein the plurality of objects is a plurality of pills, tablets, capsules, or caplets, and wherein the plurality of pills, tablets, capsules, or caplets is retained in the plurality of recesses. 20. A device according to any of claims 1, 2, 3 or 19, wherein each passageway opening is sized and configured so that the object is retained within the recess when a vacuum is produced within the passageway, wherein a number of different planar members can be interchanged into the device, and wherein the plurality of objects is a plurality of pills, tablets, capsules, or caplets, and wherein the plurality of pills, tablets, capsules, or caplets is retained in the plurality of recesses.
