A method and apparatus for the operation of a fuel cell system to avoid the freezing of water resident in one or more fuel cells during periods of system inactivity. Each fuel cell includes at least an anode, a cathode and a membrane configured to establish electrolyte communication between reaction products formed at the anode and cathode. During fuel cell system operation, a portion of the water formed remains within the fuel cell; to avoid having the water freeze and inhibit subsequent system operation, a chemical compound introduced into the fuel cells mixes with the water still resident within the fuel cell to lower the temperature upon which the onset of water freezing occurs. The chemical compound can be introduced alone under pressure in the vapor phase, or in combination with the fuel, the incoming oxygen or an inert gas. In addition, system is configured such that the chemical compound can be introduced at numerous different locations.

The invention claimed is: 1. A fuel cell system comprising: at least one fuel cell configured to react fuel with oxygen to produce electricity and at least one reaction product, said at least one fuel cell comprising: an anode flowpath configured to route said fuel through at least a portion of said fuel cell; an anode in fluid communication with said anode flowpath and upon which a catalytic reaction with said fuel is configured to take place; a cathode flowpath configured to route said oxygen through at least a portion of said fuel cell; a cathode in fluid communication with said cathode flowpath and upon which a catalytic reaction with said oxygen is configured to take place; and a membrane disposed between said anode and said cathode such that electrolyte communication is established therebetween during operation of said system; an infeed device configured to selectively introduce to at least one of said anode flowpath and said cathode flowpath a chemical compound that upon mixing with said at least one reaction product lowers the freezing temperature of said at least one reaction product; a plurality of temperature sensors comprising a first temperature sensor configured to detect an ambient temperature outside said at least one fuel cell and a second temperature sensor configured to detect a temperature inside said at least one fuel cell; a data storage device which stores historical values of at least one of said temperature inside said fuel cell and said ambient temperature; and an analysis system signally cooperative with said data storage device, said analysis system configured to analyze trends with respect to said stored historical values to determine the likelihood that a present temperature condition will require said analysis system to instruct said infeed system to introduce said chemical compound into said fuel cell; a control system signally cooperative with said plurality of temperature sensors and said data storage device such that upon comparison of at least one temperature signal received from said plurality of temperature sensors to at least one of said historical temperature values, said control system generates at least one temperature-based control signal to activate said infeed device. 2. A fuel cell system according to claim 1, wherein said control system is further configured, even during periods of operational inactivity of said fuel cell system, to produce a signal when a present temperature sensed by at least one of said ambient temperature sensor and said fuel cell temperature sensor is below that of a predetermined threshold, said signal permitting a conclusion to be drawn that conditions in said at least one fuel cell will drop below the freezing point of said at least one reaction product such that said control system generates a temperature-based control signal as said first control signal. 3. A fuel cell system according to claim 1, further comprising: a switch that is configured to turn said fuel cell system on and off; and a master signal generator signally connected between said control system and said switch such that upon switching off said fuel cell system, a master signal is generated. 4. A fuel cell system according to claim 1, whereupon activation of said infeed device said chemical compound displaces the substantial entirety of at least one of said fuel and said oxygen that was present in said at least one fuel cell just prior to said activation of said infeed device. 5. A fuel cell system according to claim 1, further comprising a supply tank in fluid communication with said infeed device, said supply tank configured to store said chemical compound in liquid form. 6. A fuel cell system according to claim 1, further comprising an air compressor in fluid communication with said cathode flowpath such that said oxygen can be pressurized prior to its introduction to said cathode. 7. A fuel cell system according to claim 6, wherein said air compressor is additionally in fluid communication with said infeed device such that said oxygen and said chemical compound are mixed prior to being introduced to said cathode. 8. A fuel cell system according to claim 6, further comprising: an auxiliary compressor for delivering a flow of air to said at least one fuel cell for start-up of said system, said auxiliary air compressor responsive to said control system; and an inert gas supply device configured to selectively supply an inert gas to said system, said inert gas supply device responsive to said control system.
