A filter assembly for filtering water from an external source, the filter assembly having a manifold assembly and a filter cartridge. The filter cartridge includes a cartridge engagement means while the manifold includes a manifold engagement means. The cartridge engagement means and manifold engagement means cooperatively interfacing for removable attachment of the filter cartridge to the manifold assembly. The cartridge engagement means and manifold engagement means oriented in a retaining relation during removal of the cartridge filter from the manifold assembly such that any entrained pressure within the cartridge filter is vented while the cartridge engagement means and manifold engagement means are in the retaining relation.

What is claimed is: 1. A filter assembly comprising: a manifold assembly having a manifold mounting structure and being fluidly operatively connected to a source of water to be filtered; a first seal; a second seal; and a cartridge comprising: a cartridge top member for mating with the manifold assembly with the first seal isolating an inlet flow of unfiltered water to the filter cartridge from a non-wetted manifold assembly portion and with the second seal isolating an inlet flow of unfiltered water to the filter cartridge from an outlet flow from the filter cartridge; a fluid inlet, the inlet being fluidly communicable with the manifold assembly; a cartridge coupler fluid outlet, the outlet being fluidly communicable with a filter cartridge outlet and being in fluid communication with the manifold assembly; a cartridge mounting structure for cooperatively engaging the manifold mounting structure; and at least one vent port positioned on the cartridge and providing a fluid flow passage past the first seal when the cartridge is not fully disengaged from the manifold assembly. 2. The filter assembly of claim 1 wherein the manifold assembly is mated to the cartridge top member via engaged helical tabs comprising: the manifold mounting structure and the cartridge mounting structure, respectively. 3. The filter assembly of claim 1 wherein the filter assembly further includes at least one locking mechanism, whereby the manifold assembly and cartridge top member are locked in place and resist unlocking rotation due to normal operating conditions but will release upon the presence of a specific predetermined pressure condition. 4. A filter assembly comprising: a manifold assembly having a feed flow circuit, a return flow circuit, a filter-feed port in fluid communication with the feed flow circuit, a filter-return port in fluid communication with the return flow circuit, and a manifold engagement mechanism; a filter cartridge having a filter inlet, a filter media, a filter outlet, a vent positioned to vent the filter when the filter is partially engagcd with thc manifold assombly, and a cartridge engagement mechanism that has a mated structure with the manifold engagement mechanism; and at least a first seal and a second seal that collectively isolate the filter-feed port and the filter inlet as well as the filter-return port and the filter outlet when the filter is fully engaged with the manifold assembly; wherein the manifold engagement mechanism engages with the cartridge engagement mechanism to form a completed engagement structure that removably secures the filter cartridge with the manifold assembly to form a filtration circuit, the completed engagement structure having two engagement configurations with the first configuration having the filter cartridge sealed fully to the manifold assembly and a second configuration with the filter being vented to the ambient atmosphere through the vent and wherein the filtration circuit is cooperatively formed by the feed flow circuit, the filter-feed port, filter inlet, filter media, filter outlet, the filter-return port and the return flow circuit; and wherein one of the first seal or second seal is configured to mate in sealing relation with a sealing surface, and wherein the vent comprises a row of ports along an edge of the sealing surface. 5. The filter assembly of claim 4, wherein the manifold engagement structure and the cartridge engagement structure rotate relative to each other to form the complete engagement structure. 6. The filter assembly of claim 4, wherein the feed flow circuit comprises a feed valve such that attachment of the filter cartridge to the manifold assembly causes the feed valve to transition to an open configuration allowing flow through the feed flow circuit. 7. The filter assembly of claim 6 wherein the filter cartridge comprises at least one arcuate ramp such that rotatable attachment of the filter cartridge to the manifold assembly causes arcuate ramp to engage and open the feed valve. 8. The filter assembly of claim 4 wherein the manifold assembly comprises a first projection with a side wall sealing surface and a projection surface on which the filter-feed port is located and a second projection projecting from the first projection, the second projection having a central channel ending at the filter-return port and a side sealing surface, the first seal being located on the side wall sealing surface of the first projection and the second seal being located on the side wall sealing surface of the second projection. 9. The filter assembly of claim 4 wherein the filter cartridge comprises a sealing projection with an outer surface, an inner wall and an edge between the inner wall and the outer surface, the cartridge engagement mechanism being located along the outer surface and the filter cartridge further comprising a flow surface within the sealing projection surrounded by the inner wall, the flow surface comprising an inlet port and a cavity having a cavity sealing wall and a outflow port surrounded by the cavity sealing wall. 10. A filter cartridge comprising a filter inlet, a filter media, a filter outlet, a vent, a sealing surface configured to facilitate a first seal isolating an inlet flow of unfiltered water to the filter cartridge from a compatible non-wetted manifold assembly portion, and a two-stage cartridge engagement mechanism, wherein the vent comprises a row of ports along an edge of the sealing surface and is positioned to vent the filter when the two-stage engagement mechanism is engaged in a second stage of engagement in which the filter cartridge is partially engaged, wherein at least one of the first and second stages of the two-stage engagement mechanism comprises a horizontal portion. 11. The filter cartridge of claim 10 wherein the two-stage engagement mechanism comprises at least one arcuate ramp. 12. The filter cartridge of claim 10 comprising a sealing projection with an outer surface, an inner wall and an edge between the inner wall and the outer surface, the cartridge engagement mechanism being located along the outer surface and the filter cartridge further comprising a flow surface within the sealing projection surrounded by the inner wall, the flow surface comprising an inlet port and a cavity having a cavity sealing wall and a outflow port surrounded by the cavity sealing wall.
