Embodiments of the invention generally provide methods and compositions for producing polyvalent antigens. In one aspect, the invention provides a method for producing a cross-linked antigen. In another aspect, the invention provides a method of using cross-linked products as antigens to immunize animals and induce strong immune responses.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for producing a polyvalent antigen for immunizing an animal, comprising (i) preparing a peptide/polypeptide/protein antigen having at least one glutamine residue, (ii) combining the antigen in a cross-linking solution with a transglutaminase, (iii) cross-linking the
What is claimed is: 1. A method for producing a polyvalent antigen for immunizing an animal, comprising (i) preparing a peptide/polypeptide/protein antigen having at least one glutamine residue, (ii) combining the antigen in a cross-linking solution with a transglutaminase, (iii) cross-linking the antigen by the transglutaminase to form the polyvalent antigen, and (iv) immunizing an animal with the cross-linked antigen. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising purifying the polyvalent antigen after said cross-linking. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the antigen is selected from a group consisting of naturally occurring proteins, recombinant proteins, naturally occurring peptides, and synthetic peptides. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the antigen in the cross-linking solution comprises one or more antigens. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the transglutaminase comprises recombinant microbial transglutaminase. 6. A method for preparing a vaccine comprising (i) preparing a peptide/polypeptide/protein compound having at least one glutamine residue, (ii) combining the compound in a cross-linking solution with a transglutaminase, (iii) cross-linking the compound by the transglutaminase into a polyvalent antigen, and (iv) immunizing an animal with the cross-linked antigen. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the compound is selected from a group consisting of naturally occurring proteins, recombinant proteins, naturally occurring peptides, and synthetic peptides. 8. The method of claim 6, wherein the compound in the cross-linking solution comprises one or more compounds. 9. The method of claim 6, wherein the transglutaminase comprises recombinant microbial transglutaminase. 10. A method for producing an antibody specifically to a compound, comprising (i) preparing a peptide/polypeptide/protein compound having at least one glutamine residue, (ii) combining the compound in a cross-linking solution with a transglutaminase, (iii) cross-linking the compound by the transglutaminase into a polyvalent antigen, (iv) immunizing an animal with the polyvalent antigen, and (v) producing an antibody from the animal. 11. The method of claim 10, further comprising purifying the polyvalent antigen after said cross-linking. 12. The method of claim 10, further comprising isolating antibodies which bind to the compound. 13. The method of claim 10, wherein the compound is selected from a group consisting of naturally occurring proteins, recombinant proteins, naturally occurring peptides and synthetic peptides. 14. The method of claim 10, wherein the compound in the cross-linking solution comprises one or more compounds. 15. The method of claim 10, wherein the transglutaminase comprises a recombinant microbial transglutaminase.
