A measurement probe for a position determining apparatus, the measurement probe comprising: a surface sensor comprising a surface containing stylus that is deflectable; internal circuitry capable of operating in a plurality of different modes; a switch; and a controller connected to receive an input from the switch and arranged to set a mode in response to an operation of the switch, wherein the controller is arranged to output a plurality of indications of the different modes in a sequence. 2. The measurement probe according to claim 1, wherein the switch comprises the stylus. 3. The measurement probe according to claim 2 in which the stylus is mounted on a seat from which the stylus is deflectable, wherein the styles and the stylus seat comprise said switch. 4. A measurement probe for a position determining apparatus, the measurement probe comprising: a surface sensor comprising a surface contacting stylus that is deflectable; internal circuitry capable of operating in a plurality of different modes; a switch; and a controller connected to receive an input from the switch and arranged to set a mode in response to an operation of the switch, wherein the switch is mounted inside the probe and operated by an actuator accessible from outside the probe. 5. The measurement probe according to claim 4 wherein the switch comprises a push button switch. 6. The measurement probe according to claim 4 wherein the switch comprises the stylus. 7. The measurement probe according to claim 6 in which the stylus is mounted on a seat from which the stylus is deflectable, wherein the stylus and the seat comprise said switch. 8. The measurement probe according to claim 6 wherein the controller receives the input from the switch when the stylus is deflected. 9. A measurement probe for a position determining apparatus, the measurement probe comprising: a surface sensor comprising a surface containing stylus that is deflectable; internal circuitry capable of operating in a plurality of different modes; a switch; and a controller connected to receive an input from the switch and arranged to set a mode in response to an operation of the switch, wherein the measurement probe includes an indicator for indicating the mode in response to a output from the controller and the indicator comprises at least one light emitting diode. 10. The measurement probe according to claim 9, wherein the switch comprises the stylus. 11. The measurement probe according to claim 10 in which the stylus is mounted on a seat from which the stylus is deflectable, wherein the stylus and the stylus seat comprise said switch. 12. A measurement probe for a position determining apparatus, the measurement probe comprising: a surface sensor comprising a surface contacting stylus that is deflectable; internal circuitry capable of operating in a plurality of different modes; a switch; and a controller connected to receive an input from the switch and arranged to set a mode in response to an operation of the switch, wherein the measurement probe includes an indicator for indicating the mode in response to an output from the controller and an indication of a current mode is obtained by operating the switch for less than a certain time period. 13. The measurement probe according to claim 12, wherein the switch comprises the stylus. 14. The measurement probe according to claim 13 in which the stylus is mounted on a seat from which the stylus is deflectable, wherein the stylus and the stylus seat comprise said switch. 15. A measurement probe for a position determining apparatus, the measurement probe comprising: a surface sensor comprising a surface contacting stylus that is deflectable; internal circuitry capable of operating in a plurality of different modes; a switch; and a controller connected to receive an input from the switch and arranged to set a mode in response to an operation of the switch, wherein if the switch is operated for greater than a certain time period, the controller enters a mode setting loop. 16. The measurement probe according to claim 15, wherein the switch comprises the stylus. 17. The measurement probe to claim 16 in which the stylus is mounted on a seat from which the stylus is deflectable, wherein the stylus seat comprise said switch. 18. A measurement probe for a position determining apparatus, the measurement probe comprising: a surface sensor; internal circuitry capable of operating in a plurality of different modes; a switch; and a controller connected to receive an input front the switch and arranged to set a mode in response to an operation of the switch, wherein each mode includes a plurality of different sub-modes. 19. A measurement probe for a position determining apparatus, the measurement probe comprising: a surface sensor; internal circuitry capable of operating in a plurality of different modes; a switch; and a controller connected to receive an input from the switch and arranged to set a mode an response to an operation of the switch, wherein the controller is activated by inserting a battery into the probe. 20. A probe for a position determining apparatus, the probe comprising: internal circuitry capable of operating in plurality of different modes; and a stylus that is deflectable from a rest position, wherein a deflection of the stylus from the rest position is used as a switch for changing between the different modes, and the probe comprises one or more indicators to indicate a mode of the probe. 21. The probe according to claim 20, further comprising a controller that receives an input from the switch, the controller sending an output to the internal circuitry to select the different modes. 22. The probe according to claim 20, further comprising a seat on which the stylus is mounted and from which the stylus is deflectable, the switch comprising the stylus and the seat. 23. The probe according to claim 22, wherein the seat is kinematic. 24. The probe according to claim 20, wherein the indicators comprise at least one light emitting diode. 25. A probe for a position determining apparatus, the probe comprising: internal circuitry capable of operating in a plurality of different modes; and a stylus that is deflectable from a rest position, wherein a deflection of the stylus from the seat position is used as a switch for changing between the different modes, and each of the modes also includes a plurality of different sub-modes. 26. The probe according to claim 25, wherein the electrical circuit is opened or closed one or more times based on one or more stylus deflections to change the internal circuitry between the different sub-modes. 27. The probe according to claim 25, further comprising a controller that receives an input from the switch, the controller sending an output to the internal circuitry to select the different modes. 28. The probe according to claim 25, further comprising a seat on which the stylus is mounted and from which the stylus is deflectable, the switch comprising the stylus and the seat. 29. The probe according to claim 28, wherein the seat is kinematic.
