In some embodiments the deformable member is constructed of a compressible material that has good sealing capabilities. The stem is configured to extend through at least one opening in the at least one structural member such that the flange abuts a surface of the structural member. A reinforcing sleeve extends around the stem and provides a protective barrier between the at least one structural member and the stem. The sleeve may be constructed of a relatively hard and durable material such as a polymer, a metal or a ceramic. In some embodiments the sleeve is substantially cylindrical with at least one tab extending from a lower end thereof. In some other embodiments the sleeve includes a flange at an upper end. The device has additional utility as a fastening member for securing objects to surfaces.

A sealing plug for sealing an opening in at least one structural member, the structural member having a thickness, comprising: a deformable member including a substantially cylindrical stem having a through-hole therein and a flange at a first end of the stem, a second end of the stem including a recess; a nut disposed within the recess; a fastening member having a head and a shank, the shank being received within the through-hole such that the head is positioned adjacent the flange; at least one washer positioned between the head and the flange; and a substantially cylindrical reinforcing sleeve disposed around the stem, for protecting the stem from damage from edges of the opening in the structural member; wherein the reinforcing sleeve includes a plurality of tabs, with each pair of neighboring tabs being separated by a circumferential space. 2. The sealing plug of claim 1, wherein the structural member is a first structural member having a first thickness, and the sealing plug is configured to seal the first opening in the first structural member and a second opening in a second structural member having a second thickness, and the length of the sleeve is approximately equal to or greater than a sum of the first thickness and the second thickness. 3. The sealing plug of claim 2, wherein the length of the sleeve approximately is equal to or greater than 1.5 times the sum. 4. The sealing plug of claim 1, wherein the tabs are evenly spaced from one another. 5. The sealing plug of claim 1, wherein the plug is adapted to assume a sealing configuration in which the nut is advanced along the shank toward the head, the stem is bulged outward, and the at least one tab is bent upward and outward. 6. The sealing plug of claim 1, wherein the reinforcing sleeve is constructed of at least one of a metal, a polymer and a ceramic. 8. A sealing plug for sealing an opening in at least one structural member, the structural member having a thickness, comprising: a deformable member including a substantially cylindrical stem having a through-hole therein and a flange at a first end of the stem, a second end of the stem including a recess; a nut disposed within the recess; a fastening member having a head and a shank, the shank being received within the through-hole such that the head is positioned adjacent the flange; at least one washer positioned between the head and the flange; and a substantially cylindrical reinforcing sleeve disposed around the stem, for protecting the stem from damage from edges of the opening in the structural member and including at least one tab extending from a first end thereof; wherein the plug is adapted to assume a sealing configuration in which the nut is advanced along the shank toward the head, the stem is bulged outward, and the at least one tab is bent upward and outward. 9. The sealing plug of claim 8, wherein the structural member is a first structural member having a first thickness, and the sealing plug is configured to seal the first opening in the first structural member and a second opening in a second structural member having a second thickness, and the length of the sleeve is approximately equal to or greater than a sum of the first thickness and the second thickness. 10. The sealing plug of claim 9, wherein the length of the sleeve approximately is equal to or greater than 1.5 times the sum. 11. The sealing plug of claim 8, wherein the reinforcing sleeve includes a plurality of tabs, with each pair of neighboring tabs being separated by a circumferential space. 12. The sealing plug of claim 11, wherein the tabs are evenly spaced from one another. 13. The sealing plug of claim 8, wherein the deformable member is constructed of a compressible material. 14.
