A wearable electronic tag for displaying graphics and text images and for communicating with other similar tags. Each tag includes a visible, graphical display adapted to be worn by a user. The tag also includes a short range, substantially unidirectional electronic communication channel, such as an infrared transmitter-receiver, located on the display unit so that, when the display unit is worn, the interface faces in a direction of the desired communication with another person who also is wearing a similar tag. This arrangement makes possible automatic data exchange and comparison of the interchanged data and display of the results of the comparison on the tags worn by the two wearers. The tags also have a longer range wireless communication system to receive and transmit data.

What is claimed is: 1. An electronic display device wearable by a first person, comprising: a display on the electronic device to show a first content, in a first mode, to a second person viewing the display at a distance, or a second content, in a second mode, to the first person reading the display nearby, the first content, shown on the display on the electronic device, having a visible aspect for viewing from the distance of the second person and being based on a determination, made at the electronic device using information received from a device worn by the second person, that it is the second person who is the person viewing the display; and the second content, shown on the display on the electronic device, having a visible aspect for viewing nearby the display. 2. The electronic display device of claim 1 which the first content is shown larger than the second content. 3. The electronic display device of claim 1 which the first content is shown in one orientation and the second content is shown in another orientation. 4. The wearable electronic display device of claim 1 further including a timer that provides time information related to the information contained in the wearable display device or in the wearable device worn by the second person. 5. The wearable electronic display device of claim 4 on which the display device can change functionality based upon a predetermined time elapse. 6. The wearable electronic display device of claim 1 further including a sensor for sensing the orientation of the device, in which the first or second display mode is selected according to the orientation. 7. The wearable electronic display device of claim 1 in which the information received from the device worn by the second person comprises an identification of the second person. 8. The wearable electronic display device of claim 1 in which the determination comprises transmitting information received from the display device worn by the second person to a server, and receiving from the server information about the second person. 9. A method comprising: on an electronic display device, wearable by a first person and capable of receiving information from an electronic display device worn by a second person, showing in a first mode a first content having a visible aspect for the second person viewing the display at a distance, or, in a second mode, a second content having a visible aspect for the first person reading the display nearby, the first content, shown on the electronic display device, being based on a determination, made at the electronic device and based on information received from a device worn by the second person, that it is the second person who is the person viewing the display. 10. The method of claim 9 which the showing is in response to a receipt, by the electronic display device wearable by the first person, of the information from the electronic display device worn by the second person. 11. The method of claim 9 also including the first person taking an action based upon the information received from the electronic display device worn by the second person. 12. The method of claim 11 in which the action comprises an attempt to find a person. 13. The method of claim 9 in which the information comprises information related to a third person who is not the first or second person. 14. The method of claim 9 in which the information received from the electronic display device worn is time-related. 15. The method of claim 9 in which the information received from the electronic display device worn by the second person is related to a third person who is not the first or the second person and is also time-related. 16. The method of claim 15 in which the information received from the electronic display device worn by the second person is related to a time that has elapsed since the second person has communicated with a third person who is not the first or the second person. 17. The method of claim 9 in which the information received from the electronic display device worn by the second person is related to a location of a third person who is not the first or the second person. 18. The method of claim 9 in which information received from the electronic display device worn by the second person comprises information related to others with whom the first or the second person has electronically communicated. 19. The method of claim 9 in which the information received from the electronic display device worn by the second person comprises information related to a number of others with whom the first or the second person has electronically communicated. 20. The method of claim 9 in which the first content is shown larger than the second content. 21. The method of claim 9 in which the first content is shown in one orientation and the second content is shown in another orientation. 22. The method of claim 1 or claim 9 in which the content comprises text.
