A method of donning a potentiating support includes: positioning a framework in abutment with an area of a body such that the framework spans a hinge joint, the framework defining a plurality of permanent openings extending completely through the framework and being bounded by the framework, wherein the framework, along its entire boundary with an opening, is elastically stretchable between a first initial state and extended states and, when expanded to a said extended state, the framework stores potential energy that is released as kinetic energy upon its return to the initial state such that the framework provides joint potentiation to the spanned hinge joint; applying tension proximate each of opposite sides of the framework such that the framework is expanded and the surface of the framework is tensioned in its abutment with the body; and securing the expanded framework in its forced abutment with the area of the body.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of donning a potentiating support for a hinge joint, comprising the steps of: (a) positioning a flexible, elastically stretchable framework of the support in abutment with an area of a body such that the framework spans a hinge joint of the body, the framework comprising an integrally molded network of interconnected, elastomeric segments, and including: (i) left and right sides comprising first and second exterior lateral segments and top and bottom sides comprising first and second exterior transverse segments, which left, right, bottom and top sides collectively define a perimeter of the framework, (ii) first, second, third, and fourth interior, mutually exclusive subsets of transverse segments, each of which extends between and interconnects the left and right sides of the perimeter of the framework, (iii) first and second interior, mutually exclusive subsets of lateral segments, each of which extends between and interconnects the top side of the perimeter of the framework and the second interior subset of transverse segments, and each of which intersects and interconnects the first interior subset of transverse segments, and (iv) third and fourth interior, mutually exclusive subsets of lateral segments, each of which extends between and interconnects the bottom side of the perimeter of the framework and the second interior subset of transverse segments, and each of which intersects and interconnects the third and fourth interior subsets of transverse segments, (v) wherein each subset of segments comprises one or more segments; (b) applying tension proximate the left and right sides of the perimeter of the framework such that the framework is expanded and the framework is tensioned in its abutment with the area of the body; and (c) securing the expanded framework in its forced abutment with the area of the body using a fastening mechanism. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the framework further comprises: (a) fifth and sixth interior lateral segments, each of which extends between and interconnects the top side of the perimeter of the framework and the second interior transverse segment, and each of which intersects and interconnects the first interior transverse segment; and (b) seventh and eighth interior lateral segments, each of which extends between and interconnects the bottom side of the perimeter of the framework and the third interior transverse segment, and each of which intersects and interconnects the fourth interior transverse segment. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the framework has a generally planar configuration when in a relaxed state. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the fastening mechanism is connected proximate opposite ends of the left and right sides of the framework. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the fastening mechanism is connected at multiple points proximate opposite ends of the left and right sides of the framework. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the support further comprises an expandable and recoverable liner attached to the framework for disposition between the framework and the area of the body to be supported. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of positioning the framework in abutment with an area of a body such that the framework spans a hinge joint of the body does not include overlapping the framework on itself. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the framework comprises an exposed framework of the support. 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the framework includes no internal cavity. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the framework comprises a semirigid framework. 11. The method of claim 1 wherein the hinge joint comprises a knee joint. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the hinge joint comprises an elbow joint. 13. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of positioning the framework in abutment with an area of a body requires the step of slipping the support over a terminal end of an arm or leg of the body. 14. The method of claim 1 wherein said step of positioning the framework in abutment with an area of a body includes the step of wrapping the support over the area of the body without having to slip the support over a terminal end of a leg or arm of the body. 15. The method of claim 1, wherein the potentiating support only partially encircles the body when the framework is secured in tensioned abutment with the area of the body. 16. The method of claim 1 wherein the potentiating support completely encircles the body when the framework is secured in tensioned abutment with the area of the body. 17. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of applying tension comprises applying tension at multiple points of attachment proximate each of the left and right sides of the perimeter of the framework. 18. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of applying tension comprises applying tension at a single point of attachment proximate opposite ends of each of the left and right sides of the perimeter of the framework. 19. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of flexing about the hinge joint whereby the framework is expanded from the initial state to an extended state and stores potential energy that is released as kinetic energy upon its return to the initial state. 20. The method of claim 1 wherein segments of the framework define a plurality of permanent opening. 21. The method of claim 20, wherein segments of the framework that define a particular one of the permanent openings have substantially the same elastic stretchability in the area of the particular permanent opening. 22. The method of claim 20, wherein segments of the framework that define a particular one of the permanent openings are substantially similar in cross-section. 23. The method of claim 20, wherein the permanent openings in the framework have different configurations and dimensions. 24. The method of claim 23, wherein at least one of the permanent openings has a generally oval configuration. 25. The method of claim 23, wherein at least one of the permanent openings has a generally polygonal configuration. 26. The method of claim 20, wherein the ratio of the total area of the permanent openings to the total surface area of the surface of the framework is 50% or greater.
