What is claimed is: 1. An aircraft video data recorder (VDR) system to be carried onboard an aircraft, the aircraft video data recorder (VDR) system comprising: a nonvolatile digital memory array; a signal generating device located in the aircraft, the signal generating device being adapted to generate a data signal representing a flight condition of the aircraft; at least one IP encoder for receiving the data signal from the signal generating device, the IP encoder being adapted for convening the data signal to an IP format signal, the IP format signal including data formatted in IP format; an interface for introducing the IP format signal to the nonvolatile digital memory array; and a hardened housing, the hardened housing being adapted to preserve from damage in the event of an aircraft crash the nonvolatile digital memory array, the preserved nonvolatile digital memory array subsequent to an aircraft crash permitting recovery of data from the IP format signal introduced to the nonvolatile digital memory array. 2. The system of claim 1 and further comprising: wherein the encoder is located at the hardened housing. 3. The system of claim 1 and further comprising: wherein the encoder is located at the signal generating device. 4. The system of claim 1 and further comprising: wherein the signal generating device includes an IP format camera, the IP format camera including an IP encoder. 5. The system of claim 1 and further comprising: wherein the signal generating device is an analog camera, the analog camera further including a digital signal encoder. 6. The system of claim 1 and further comprising: wherein the signal generating device is an analog audio transmitter, the analog audio transmitter further including a digital signal encoder. 7. The system of claim 1 and further comprising: a plurality of signal generating devices located in the aircraft, the plurality of signal generating devices being connected to the at least one IP encoder, each of said devices generating a discrete signal, each discrete signal being encoded in IP format by the at least one IP encoder; a multiplexer connected to the at least one IP encoder for combining the discrete signals encoded in IP format into a stream of data packets in IP format for transmission to the nonvolatile digital memory array. 8. The system of claim 7 and further comprising: the plurality of signal generating devices including a plurality of dissimilar signal generating devices; a switched hub connected to the plurality of dissimilar signal generating devices for managing the signals from the plurality of dissimilar signal generating signal devices. 9. The system of claim 1 and further comprising: wherein the signal generating device is a wireless device, the wireless device generating a wireless signal; a wireless access point in communication with the wireless device for transmitting the wireless signal from the wireless device to the interface. 10. The system of claim 1 and further comprising: wherein the signal generating device is a legacy flight data acquisition and management system. 11. The system of claim 1 and further comprising: a panic button device for sending an alert signal to the system when activated. 12. The system of claim 11 and further comprising: wherein the alert signal is a control signal for controlling distribution of output signals external of the system when the panic button device is activated. 13. The system of claim 1 and further comprising: further including a communication link for sending receiving station external of the aircraft an external communication signal, the external communication signal including at least one of the data signal, the IP format signal, and the data formatted in IP format. 14. The system of claim 13 and further comprising: wherein the communication link is a communications satellite interface. 15. The system of claim 13 and further comprising: wherein the communication link is a military radio. 16. The system of claim 13 and further comprising: wherein the communication link is a wireless LAN. 17. The system of claim 1 and further comprising: an output link and a LAN interface, the output link being in direct communication with the LAN interface for distributing external of the system via the LAN interface a system output signal in IP format, the system output signal in IP format including at least one of the data signal, the IP format signal, and the data formatted in IP format. 18. The system of claim 17 and further comprising: a switch hub for distributing the system output signal in IP format via the LAN interface. 19. The system of claim 18 and further comprising: an ARINC link for receiving from the LAN interface the system output signal. 20. The system of claim 18 and further comprising: an aircraft LAN for receiving from the LAN interface the system output signal. 21. The system of claim 1 and further comprising: apparatus coupled to the hardened housing, the apparatus being adapted to generate a locating signal to assist in locating the hardened housing in the event of an aircraft crash. 22. An aircraft video data recorder adapted to store compressed digital image data generated during operation of an aircraft, the compressed digital image data including at least one of still frame image data and video data from at least one camera aboard the aircraft, the at least one camera having a field of view including at least a portion of the aircraft, the aircraft video data recorder comprising: a memory array located on the aircraft, the memory array including nonvolatile digital memory; a memory manager associated with the memory array, the memory manager being configured to introduce into the nonvolatile digital memory the compressed digital image data; an interface adapted to receive the compressed digital image data encoded in IP format, the interface being adapted to introduce to the memory manager the compressed digital image data encoded in IP format; an IP format encoder, the IP format encoder being configured to receive from the at least one camera the compressed digital image data, the IP format encoder being configured to encode in IP format the compressed digital image data, the IP format encoder providing at least the compressed digital image data in IP format, the compressed digital image data in IP format being provided across an IP protocol network to at least the interface; and a hardened housing, the hardened housing being adapted to preserve from damage in the event of an aircraft crash at least the memory array, the preserved memory array subsequent to an aircraft crash permitting recovery of the compressed digital image data stored therein. 23. The aircraft video data recorder of claim 22 and further comprising: the interface being an Ethernet interface adapted to receive the compressed digital image data in IP format. 24. The aircraft video data recorder of claim 22 and further comprising: the memory manager being configured to introduce into the nonvolatile digital memory the compressed digital image data encoded in IP format. 25. The aircraft video data recorder of claim 22 and further comprising: the interface being adapted to receive in addition to the compressed digital image data in IP format at least one legacy data signal in IP format, the legacy data signal in IP format including a legacy data signal, the legacy data signal being encoded in IP format by an IP format encoder, the legacy data signal being generated by at least one of the following: a flight data acquisition and management system (FDAMS), a digital flight data acquisition unit (DFDAU), an aircraft condition monitoring system (ACMS), a camera carried on the aircraft, a LAN carried on the aircraft, a wireless LAN carried on the aircraft, a panic button carried on the aircraft, a ground control system, a radio link, an audio encoder, an ARINC, an aircraft interface bus, a navigation data source, an aircraft operation data source, a radar data source. 26. A multimedia flight data recorder adapted to store a plurality of digital data signals generated during operation of an aircraft, the plurality of digital data signals including at least one set of compressed digital image data, the at least one set of compressed digital image data being generated by a camera located on the aircraft for monitoring a portion of the aircraft, the at least one set of compressed digital image data including at least one of still frame image data and motion video data, the plurality of digital data signals including at least one legacy data signal, the multimedia flight data recorder comprising: a memory array located on the aircraft, the memory array including nonvolatile digital memory; an Ethernet interface adapted to receive the plurality of digital data signals in IP format, the interface being adapted to introduce into the memory array the digital data signals in IP format; an IP format encoder associated with the Ethernet interface, the IP format encoder being adapted to encode in IP format at least one of the digital data signals; a hardened housing, the hardened housing being adapted to preserve from damage in the event of an aircraft crash at least the memory array, the preserved memory array subsequent to an aircraft crash permitting recovery of the plurality of digital data signals stored in the memory array, the hardened housing being hermetically sealed; a memory manager adapted for distributing the plurality of digital data signals to the memory array; a processor adapted to drive distribution of the compressed digital image data to the memory array by the memory manager; locating apparatus coupled to the hardened housing, the locating apparatus being adapted to generate a locating signal to assist in locating the hardened housing in the event of an aircraft crash. 27. The multimedia flight data recorder of claim 26 and further comprising: a digital encoder connected to encode in digital format at least one legacy data signal received in analog format, the digital encoder being associated with the Ethernet interface to provide to the Ethernet interface in digital format the at least one legacy data signal. 28. The multimedia flight data recorder of claim 27 and further comprising: the at least one legacy data signal being generated by at least one of the following: a flight data acquisition and management system (FDAMS), a digital flight data acquisition unit (DFDAU), an aircraft condition monitoring system (ACMS), a camera carried on the aircraft, a LAN carried on the aircraft, a wireless LAN carried on the aircraft, a panic button carried on the aircraft, a ground control system, a radio link, an audio encoder, an ARINC, an aircraft interface bus, a navigation data source, an aircraft operation data source, a radar data source.
