A method of performing chemical reactions between fluids, said method comprising the steps of arranging a plurality of metal sheets for providing first fluid flow channels adjacent to and in heat transfer contact with second fluid flow channels between adjacent ones of said metal sheets, providing a plurality of corrugated metal foils each comprising a ceramic coating thereon, incorporating catalyst material within said ceramic coatings, disposing said metal foils that incorporate catalyst material within at least some of said flow channels, passing a first fluid mixture through said first fluid flow channels and a second fluid mixture through said second fluid flow channels, wherein said first fluid mixture is different from said second fluid mixture, each fluid mixture undergoing separate reactions, one of said reactions being endothermic while the other reaction is exothermic, and causing heat to transfer between the adjacent fluid flow channels. 2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said endothermic reaction is a methane/steam reforming reaction. 3. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein said methane/steam reforming reaction occurs at an elevated pressure between 200 kPa and 2 MPa. 4. A method as defined in claim 3 comprising: supplying steam and methane at elevated temperature and pressure to said first fluid flow channels, performing methane combustion for generating heat within said second fluid flow channels; using the fluid mixture resulting from said steam/methane reforming for performing Fischer-Tropsch synthesis; and condensing liquid components of said fluid mixture resulting from the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. 5. A method as defined in claim 4 comprising transferring heat given out during said Fischer-Tropsch synthesis for preheating fluid supplied to said first fluid flow channels. 6. A method as defined in claim 5 comprising transferring heat from said fluid mixture resulting from said steam/methane reforming for preheating fluid supplied to said fluid flow channels. 7. A method as defined in claim 5 comprising: extracting short-chain hydrocarbons from the fluid mixture resulting from said Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, and recirculating said short-chain hydrocarbons for undergoing a second Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. 8. A method as defined in claim 1 comprising: providing said catalyst material along a flow path in at least some of said flow channels, and varying said catalytic material for providing low catalytic activity initially and higher catalytic activity further along said flow path. 9. A method as defined in claim 1 wherein said ceramic coating has a thickness in the range of 10-50 μm. 10. A method as defined in claim 1 wherein said ceramic coating comprises alumina. 11. A method of performing chemical reactions between gases comprising: providing a reactor comprising a bonded stack comprising a plurality of metal sheets, the stack defining first flow channels between adjacent sheets and second flow channels between adjacent sheets, such that the first flow channels and the second flow channels can carry different fluids, and such that there is good thermal contact between fluids in the first and the second flow channels, and the stack providing structural support such that the fluids in the first and the second flow channels may differ in pressure; and wherein there is a non-structural catalyst-carrying metal substrate in those flow channels in which a reaction is to occur, the metal substrate carrying the catalyst for the said reaction, and the metal substrate comprising a corrugated metal foil; supplying a gas mixture that is to undergo reaction to a set of flow channels in said reactor containing a catalyst for said reaction. 12. A process for converting methane into higher molecular weight hydrocarbons, the process comprising subjecting the methane to steam reforming in a reactor containing a catalyst for steam reforming wherein the heat required for the reaction is provided by combustion occurring in an adjacent channel in the reactor; subjecting the resulting gas mixture to Fischer-Tropsch synthesis at an elevated pressure in a reactor containing a catalyst for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction; condensing liquid components of the fluid mixture resulting from the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis; and separating the liquid hydrocarbon therefrom; wherein at least one of the said reactors comprises a bonded stack comprising a plurality of metal sheets, the stack defining first flow channels between adjacent sheets and second flow channels between adjacent sheets, such that the first flow channels and the second flow channels can carry different fluids, and such that there is good thermal contact between fluids in the first and the second flow channels, and the stack providing structural support such that the fluids in the first and the second flow channels may differ in pressure; and wherein there is a non-structural catalyst-carrying metal substrate in those flow channels in which a reaction is to occur, the metal substrate carrying the catalyst for the said reaction, and the metal substrate comprising a corrugated metal foil. 13. The process of claim 12 wherein the reactor for steam reforming and the reactor for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis each comprises a bonded stack comprising a plurality of metal sheets, the stack defining first flow channels between adjacent sheets and second flow channels between adjacent sheets, such that the first flow channels and the second flow channels can carry different fluids, and such that there is good thermal contact between fluids in the first and the second flow channels, and the stack providing structural support such that the fluids in the first and the second flow channels may differ in pressure; and wherein there is a non-structural catalyst-carrying metal substrate in the flow channels in which a reaction is to occur, the metal substrate carrying the catalyst for the reaction, and the metal substrate comprising a corrugated metal foil. 14. The process of claim 12 wherein the process is performed at an oil or gas well to convert natural gas into a liquid hydrocarbon. 15. The process of claim 13 wherein the process is performed at an oil or gas well to convert natural gas into a liquid hydrocarbon.
